AN old saying
I hope its true in our case.
Seems the world is trying to write us off already, my theory is - it'll work in our favour.
Especially after I Spoke to a Bolton fan who went last satdee at work today. He said there was really nothing between the two sides for long periods, apart form some excruciatingly bad marking for two set pieces, all after a truly bizarre opening goal.(his words - not mine)
I assured him that we were normally superbly marshalled for such situations and it wouldn't happen again under Pulis.
I also reminded him our two best players only had 'bit parts' and another more experienced central defender would come into the side.
He actually thought we are a big physical side (obviously) but also, a very useful side and the result somewhat flattered his own team.
i.e. honest appraisal born of an objectively honest opposing fan
he said - don't worry Tone - you'll be OK in a soothing burr
just before I ripped his fuckin head off ! (joking)
rest is true though !

The idea that we generally have a decent defensive record doesn't realy hold true though does it? Under Tonys previous reign it definately did, but last season we were a little shoddy at the back.
Hopefully the additions we know about, and maybe some we dont, will sort that out.

You've seriously got to be kidding about us being normally superbly marshalled Tone? Some of our defending from set pieces and crosses - particularly ones to the back post - last season was pretty poor even at Championship level.
Hopefully we'll improve with the inclusion of Davies and Faye, but the current mob's ability to cope with set-pieces leaves a lot to be desired.

yep fair points, we were leaky last season to be sure - but solid defence is Pulis's forte - as a rule

I remeber looking at the stats last March(?)...
I don't know whether we picked up, relatively, in the last couple of months of the season - but in the first 23 games of the Shawcross-Cort defensive axis, only Scunthorpe had a worse defensive record than us......
Hopefully the arrival of Abdoulaye Faye will go a long way to correcting things.

lord b - totally disagree - under Pulis - we wont see relegation - itll be hard slog - we may even resort to 'parking the bus' away from home -but, we will scrap and scrape - and stay up !

that would be great.
I think we need to set targets: 1st point 1st win 1st clean sheet 11 points (matching Derby) 17 points (matching 84-85) 25points (I would personally be staisfied with that this year)
38 points safety!

We had the best defensive record in the Championship for two seasons running, but I think we sacrified that a bit last season to be more positive going forward and look where it got us
We really need to tighten up now though, or we will be punished week in week out like we were on Saturday. At Championship level we had a chance to score more than they did, but at the top level that is a no hoper
Sort it quick Tone

When I saw the goals that Satsuma scored I confess to being a bit worried. Rightly so as it turns out.
However I understand that when Faye heads the ball you can queue up at the half way line.
Remember Dave Watson???? and Vinnie????
Will help the defence enormously

laughable
We started our first Premiership game with basically the same defence as the season previous in the CCC ( okay, nit-pick, we didn't, we had a right-back at left-back, bu you know what I mean)
Who, seriously, thought that would be the case? anyone?

I'd be very happy if we reverted to the tactics of the year Pulis kept us up. Performances like the games away to Wolves and the other mid-table/pushing top 6 teams where we just defended, defended, defended and defended. Blackburn's performance against Arsenal in the cup a couple of years ago when Fabregas shouted at Mark Hughes. They're what we'll need to pick up points.

yep -we will revert to a solid defence sooner or later or, it will indeed be curtains - at this level i read every post on this board and thats the first time youve said something close to reality - and well done ! however - realise that the rest of us (while youve been in dreamland rambling on about how every premiership team is shite and we are equals) have realised that with the current squad we are fucked - and if the club were aiming for a quick up and down prem experience (like hull have basically admitted) then they should have said so

nice1 yestony,
I am a bolton fan and for the first 20 mins i was getting very nervous, we saw very little of the ball and Kitson looked quite nippy, couldnt tell he was a new signing, fitted in well.
Yes the first goal was a fluke, but no offence guys this is the prem and you are newly promoted team, you are going to conced goals, fact. Some will be amazing Ronaldo goals, others will be flukey stiensen goals, but they will go it. The main problem on sat was once we scored you looked shell shocked and never got back into any kind of rythm, as our confidence rose yorus went down. After the break you never looked like a team that wanted to win 4-3, wasnt a matter of ability but drive.
Also you have to do homework on teams, and work hard to prepare, come on guys, bolton long ball set plays, davis header. Dosnt take a Stato to work out that is our major threat.
Basically I saw nothign in that game to say Stoke are dead, but the players need passion and to make the opposition fear you.
When we play you again in March, i want to be thinking 'ooo not Stoke away' instead of 'wayy that 3 points in the bag'

Jeez, one defeat and suddenly we're wank.
I suppose Portsmouth are suddenly utterly wank? Man Citeh also lost by 2 goals and I suppose they are as wank as us?!?
The basic facts are we had conceded firstly from an incredible fluke and then had 2 very poor defensive lapses. Otherwise we competed equally and decent enough opportunities to score more than once.
Why is everyone so down??! Personally I'd be waaaaaaaaay more concerned if I was a tesco carrier bag fan - I watched that game and the Arse literally took them pieces at will how the score stayed at 1-0 was more to do with the grace of god than there defending!
The problem we had going into this game was we didn't have a defensive marshall type player. It was well proven last season that Cort and Shawcross as a partnership just doesn't work both a good individual defenders but neither are leaders. Faye will be the answer just like Riggot was last season and Higgy was previously. I just hope we get another experience central defender to add to the squad - Riggot would be nice.
Hell on Saturday we couldn't even field our strongest team!
I see people have suddenly started crawling up Geovanni's arse saying we should of signed him etc. One decent game and suddenly he's a world beater . . . however after their first defeat which will most likely be at Blackburn this Saturday and there heads drop and suddenly people are expect him to do something he'll go into hiding as he did at Citeh.
It the first game of the season - they always throw up strange results.
Calm the f*** down - we will improve.

I'm looking forward to my laugh near the end of the season when it becomes apparent we're not going down, it will be similar to the laugh I had last season when we were "unfairly" promoted, but probably a little louder and longer.

Yestony - let me just state a fact for you. It may shatter your world but I shall do so nonetheless: PULIS IS HUMAN.
He can and WILL make mistakes. Sure he hasn't been relegated yet, but he's never been in the Premiership before. Truth be told it's probably because of TP's limited tactics that we're struggling to attract anyone half decent.
All this "we will stay up because we are Stoke" and "Pulis can do no wrong" lines are completely unwarranted and utterly baffling.
