Did your source actually describe Davies as a full-back, monkey? He only seems a full-back in the same way that Clint Hill, Danny Higginbotham or Wayne Thomas is? And the Saints fans seem to think getting away from full-back was a consideration in him leaving Boro.... Yes his words were we are signing a young full back from Southampton, Davies, deal will definately happen. He was at Reebok today, must be thinking he will be guarenteed a place with how defence performed today!!

This deal MUST be 99% done otherwise Pulis would never have mentioned the deal on Radio Stoke for fear of it being scuppered. Having seen our centre halves yesterday I hope he plays in the centre with Faye

STOKE boss Tony Pulis cushioned the blow of today's 3-1 loss at Bolton by revealing that Southampton's 23-year-old defender Andrew Davies could soon become the club's fourth signing of the summer.
Speaking after seeing his side succumb to three first-half goals in today's momentous Premier League opener, Pulis disclosed: "We are speaking to Southampton and we have agreed a deal with them.
"He's got good experience, but is also a young lad with good legs.
"You need that in the Premier League, but we will see because the deal is not finalised yet.
"We also need to get a bit more Premier League experience in and we have been working hard to do that."
Davies, who can play left-back or centre-half, was watching from the stands at The Reebok this afternoon as Stoke blew a decent start to the day by conceding three goals in the space of 13 first-half minutes.
There was little the visitors could do about Gretar Steinsson's fluke from the right flank, but shoddy defending from two free-kicks was inexcusable as Kevin Davies and Johan Elmander profited with unopposed headers.
"The first goal really took the wind out of our sails," admitted Pulis. "and we have got to make sure we are psychologically strong enough to take that.
"It didn't happen to us last year, but for 10 or 15 minutes we dropped our heads. We had a mad 15 minutes.
"We have been punished first by a little bit of good fortune for them and then with the set plays.
"People know their men from free-kicks, but people switched off because our confidence dropped off a bit.
"But did we deserve to get beat by three? I don't think we did."
Actually, it was 3-1 thanks to a last-gasp consolation after Ricardo Fuller clinically headed home a raking cross from fellow sub Carl Dickinson out on the left.
"Ric has been out for four or five weeks, so we were never going to risk him from the start," Pulis explained afterwards.
"It was the same with Liam (Lawrence) because he's had a groin problem. Starting them would have been a massive risk not worth taking."
He declared himself satisfied with newcomers Thomas Sorensen, Seyi Olofinjana and Dave Kitson after they completed a full 90 minutes this afternoon.
"I thought Thomas was fine. He looked commanding and assured, he's a good goalkeeper. Olly did some smashing things in midfield, he has the quality.
"I thought Dave and Mama (Sidibe) linked up well. Dave showed some smashing touches as well and there were one or two situations that, if they had dropped, showed he will get goals for you."

Fair bit of anger flying around on the So'ton board...
Jeeze, that does suck doesn't it? The thought of him & Killer at the back was one of my very few things I was confident about for this season!
Very much so now we just sold our best player. Mabye we should start giving our POTS award to our ****e players (e.g. Thomas), then we might shift them instead of our best. If we don't replace him we'll be fooked.
Silly thing to do. Sell almost every other player but not Davies and certainly not for 1.3 million.
Shame a real shame, thought he would have a much bigger price tag something in the region of £4 million but for all we know their could be something in his contract which allows him to go to a Premier League club for £1.3 million or if we didn't get promoted last season.
I don't think he's anywhere near the player people on him make him out to be, BUT, he will be missed and we'll need a replacement. I imagine JP will just use Raccine/Lancashire though.
Don't know why people are surprised. This is our situation. If there's a reasonable bid, people will leave. We're trying to get back to a vaguely sensible financial position. All we can do is get behind Jan and whoever we have on the pitch. The finances suck, but we're doing what we can to fix it, it's just a crappy situation. Probably the price of staying up so long, and of course, wasting so many resources in our first couple of CCC years, but there we go.
He was one of our better defenders and its a shame he's gone but I agree with adriansfc that he's not as good as he's been made out to be. He's pretty much got legendary status because he was not as bad as the rest of the team last year. But in the end this sale was probably necessary as well, we needed some cash and with Rasiak, Saga and Viafara not bringing in any fees and Skacel still here we needed to sell someone else. I do hope that a replacement is brought in although maybe we should go for a fullback in stead.
Absolutely gutted. Davies is the one player we should have kept above everyone else. Perry and Svensson won't be able to play every game this season, so we'll struggle when they are out now. Lowe is taking us down again.
£1.3 million? Daylight robbery.
If Lowe has sold him for £1.3m then i am in total disbelief. Sure he has been injured for a few months but he is worth a hell of a lot more then that, christ even Thomas cost more then Davies. Total shock if this happens.
If there's a clause in his contract to sell him to a Prem side then there's not much Lowe could do about it. If it's a panic sale just to raise money then, at £1.3m, we've undersold by a long way and those sanctioning the deal need to be shot.
If we didn't know it before, then we know now this is going to be a LONG and difficult season
Absolutely unbelievable. I am livid.
So, Safri gone. Now they've sold the last remaining player of noticable talent (not wishing to insult the other players but these 2 were the difference to our squad imho, bar Killer). In the alleged Andy Davies sale, we have lost our best player and the board have gone against all they have stated - keeping young, hungry, talented players. He was the epitome of committment and hunger, the untruthful words the board mentioned "the club were so keen to keep and develop". We all know their words are meaningless. They should just not speak, then we'd know they're not lying.
I'm gutted but what choice is there? We couldn't give Euell or Thomas away in a raffle, Skacel would rather sit in the stands and count his money than take a pay cut to play elsewhere, we couldn't actually persuade anyone to buy Rasiak or Saganowski and now it looks like Surman is on his way, too. I think the sheer scale of our up-sh1t-creekedness is finally becoming apparent

Think he could be a very good signing.... as a centre half
Why can't we just sign players for positions where they are naturally comfortable?! Left back, left footer, left wing, left footer - it ain't difficult and sounds just like Thommo

Exactly, far to many players playing out of position. Can't live with that in th PL, that's just for emergency.

TP has stated he wants to bring in a couple of players with good "premier" experience. This won't class as 1 and the left sided midfielder from abroad rumours would not be either so that would still leave a couple of experienced premier players on the hit list

Saying that I have found the following;
At right Back Davies is beginning to look like a natural in the position. He does the simple things very well, he tries to get forward and support the attacks but he realises that his duties are mainly to keep it tight at the back.
He enjoyed his best season under Gareth Southgate's tutelage and did enough to keep both Abel Xavier and Stuart Parnaby out of the right-back slot as he went on to make 23 appearances for Boro.

I don't get why we're not enquiring about that grey haired Cardiff right back. He is a great defender, tall and is also good going forward. Against Middlesborough in their FA cup run last season he was their best player by a mile. He'd probably cost less than £3million which is a steal when you think we're paying £2.5million for Faye at the age of 30.

www.saintsfc.co.uk/news/?page_id=10457Jan Poortvliet has spoken out today to clarify the situation regarding rumours surrounding defender Andrew Davies' possible move away from St. Mary's. Following heavy speculation over the weekend, linking Davies with a move to Premier League new-boys Stoke City, Poortvliet said, "Some of the newspaper reports today have given a slightly misleading impression of this situation. "Andrew has been out injured since my arrival and I have not seen him play. His agent has been keen for him to complete a deal away from the Club and if players and agents feel that way then it doesn't help the rest of the team. "I have been kept fully up to date with any negotiations that have been happening, but when asked about it after yesterday's match I was simply unaware of the exact stage that any talks had reached between Andrew's representatives and Stoke City." "Andrew Davies is one of the high earners at the club and we've made no secret of the financial pressures that have been placed on us by the bank."

£1.2m plus Ant Jr - Bargain! www.thisishampshire.net/display.var.2427446.0..phpSaints may cash in on young stars By Adam LeitchComment | Read Comments (22) SAINTS are today set to sell one of the crown jewels in their young squad - and another could soon follow. Defender Andrew Davies, 23, is expected to join Premier League new boys Stoke for a fee of around £1.2m plus Anthony Pulis, the midfielder son of Potters boss Tony. And Andrew Surman is attracting growing interest from Reading, whose director of football Nicky Hammond was sat in the front row of the Saints side of the directors' box for the 2-1 loss to Birmingham. The Royals, in search of a left back after the sale of Nicky Shorey to Aston Villa, are set to stump up around £2.5m to try and tempt cash-strapped Saints into selling. Saints are believed to need to bring in around £4m in transfer fees for players before the window closes at the end of the montn. But they have so far struggled to shift what they consider to be the dead wood of their squad.

I think I would be very tempted to offer £3.7M plus Pulis Jnr for Davies and Surman. Surman could play anywhere on the left, so in one deal you could solve both full back problems or RB and LW. TP enquired about Surman in January as well.

That explains why Pulis Jr got 90 minutes in the Southampton friendly then. I've been off this board for a few days, I take it Austin didn't break Ant's foot in training then?

www.saintsweb.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=642From what I've read about Pulis' kid, we must be total mugs if we are taking him as a makeweight in any deal, especially when he is not only not as good as what we already have, but considerably worse. Here is a player who if he came on, would actually weaken the team. Stoke must be laughing their heads off that they could offload this cruddy player onto some idiot Club so desperate for lolly that they might have to accept him in order to get the money for Davies. If we ever have to play him because we are so short of cover that there is no alternative, that will be the time that we have scraped the bottom of the barrel and might as well give up all hope.
