proportional, what would have happened if a young couple with a new born baby were on their way home from the hospital for the first time, with their loved by everyone aging grandma in the backseat and you ploughed into the side of them, destroying their lives ?

It's the fucking parking fines that do my head in. Had a meeting at Staffs Uni during summer last year. They had a graduation event on and so had cordoned off all of the car parks except one. Staff told me to park in a particular spot so I did. They told me to log my reg on the tablet in reception. At reception, tablet is turned off, no receptionist present as they are essentially 'closed'. Now running late I went to my meeting - cue a £70 fine from parking eye. Being an arsey twat I refused to pay and it's now going through the courts. I now of course regret it, as I know I'll end up paying more, but I wanted to push the fuckers and waste as much of their time as possible and ramp up their legal expenses. Absolute pain in the arse. A solicitor I know told me that 'every principled person I know is poor' - very true

I picked my lad up from Stoke Station last November
There were roadworks on our usual route home, so I went up College Road towards Hanley Park, as I have done many times in the past.
Got a fine, as its now apparently a dedicated bus lane, they introduced it in June 2023, and hadnt issued any fines up until October
Next time I collected him I looked for the signs - its the worlds smallest tiny sign by the roundabout, no fanfare, no big warnings (for something quite new and a big change!) - but had caught out nearly 10,000 people in Oct and November so you might argue the signs/warnings/notices arent quite enough...dread to think by now given the amount of train and student traffic around there.
No point fighting the system, just paid the half price £35 before it jumped to £70 - but I was seething - a proper money making racket!

I got one going up there they must be making a fortune of fines there... problem is by not using that road anymore it's causing more congestion on the surrounding roads

Q: Can you get a parking fine in England if you park in a parking space without paying if there are 100 free parking spaces around, it's completely deserted and no cars coming in?
That happened to both my father waiting for me to get something at home, and to my mate when we bought something in a shopping mall.
No cars in sight. Both cases on very hot summer days.

Totally get you eggy, at first glance it does look over the top but, when you ponder it a bit ...say they make it £50 .....most people would just tut and prob chance it again and again or even stretch those few seconds.
There's more chance you'll be far more cautious now you've been hit harder.
Nothing compared to how you'd have felt pulling an old lady or child from under your car th.
I guess im saying, take it as a positive (lesson learnt) rather than a negative

I went to the local hospital the other week for blood tests, couldnt find a disabled parking space as I'm a Blue Badge owner. Anyway found an empty parking space, parked up displayed my Blue Badge and timer. Went and had my bloods done, about a 15 minute job. Got back to my car to find a car park attendant waiting for me. He then began to tell me that I should'nt be parking there and should be in a disabled spot. I then asked him to come with me and walked him to disabled bays on 2 car parks and showed him the cars in said bays. out of 10 spots only one car had a Blue Badge. He then apologised to me and said I was about to get a ticket but under the circumstances he understood. This makes me angry when people do this. It also happens outside supermarkets even with family parking spaces as well. I know its not all about me but with my condition I cant walk far and there's even people in a worse condition as me. Its about time these people who warrant fines and such should have a little common sense when issuing fines left right and centre. Rant over.

Back in 2022 I was called into my managers office to answer why id received a parking ticket issued with a photo showing the offending vehicle. It was even in a designated area, which confused me even more. This was at the Royal Stoke Harplands and the offending vehicle was a High Dependancy ambulance complete with blues. They said we had stayed for more than the designated time. After arguing with some deviant they finally saw how stupid they were, but if an ambulance can get nicked on a hospital then we are all screwed. While we are on this. One of my colleagues got a speed ticket doing 55 in a 50 on the M6 by our friends at Birmingham council. He was in an active ambulance ( high dependency ) with blues on. The councils argument was that because it was white and not yellow so wasn't an emergency vehicle. Half of these dummy's don't understand the rules of driving in an emergency situation. They strung it out and bottled it only when the guy driving informed them he wanted to go to court.

What is the etiquette when you can hear blues and twos but cannot see them I ask because yesterday after leaving Derriford Hospital I entered Derriford Roundabout which is one of the busiest roundabouts in Plymouth with each junction traffic light controlled. As I waited to exit the roundabout towards Plymouth I heard an ambulance siren close by. So I slowed down even though the traffic lights were green checking my mirrors and right and left to see where the ambulance was coming from. I still couldn’t see it but the sirens were getting louder, perhaps I should have stopped but that may have caused more confusion to other drivers. Suddenly the ambulance was right up my chuff now blasting his horn at me. I continued slowly unable to move out of his way because of traffic in other lanes. He eventually overtook me as we exited the roundabout towards Plymouth. Very unnerving tbh.

£225 fine compared to the more standard £100 , suggests rather than merely being treated as setting off early , you’ve been treated as going through a red light that’s been red for a considerable time ..
possibly the view is then taken that in the event of a collision the opposite flow of traffic would also have an extended period of green , and so increasing the risk that at least one vehicle would be driving at speed

Also apparently if you are at lights and an emergency vehicle is attempting to get past with blues and twos you have two options do not move,in which case you can/will be fined for obstruction and if you go through the lights to let them pass ,you will also be fined for going through red lights. This has been factually checked out.

He eventually overtook me as we exited the roundabout towards Plymouth. Very unnerving tbh. I did the driving while the Paramedic attended to the patient. If you talk to a lot of people they will tell you that their is no obligation under law to get out of the way of an emergency vehicle. Although the law isn't written that way, their is a law in place which does cover that. It comes under ( I think its pronounced this way ) the emergency workers act ( obstruction ) where obstructing or hindering an active emergency vehicle if you can safely move out of it's way becomes an offence and you can be fined a level 5 fine should you be convicted. A level 5 fine is unlimited. Of course the operative word here is safely move out of the way and not commit another offence while doing so. In your situation the best thing to do is just reduce speed and as best you can check your surroundings. You will also hear a change in the sirens depending on what the vehicle is negotiating, such as on a straight road you will get the continuous siren, but if that vehicle has to cross a junction or comes up behind traffic it needs to pass or move over it will change its tones to the one usually heard on films when a police car is chasing someone. Its used to give a bit of extra alertness to other road users.

To add no expert , just my 2 penneth …. Nor judgemental, we’ve all probably gone through red at one time or another ( in a range of differing circumstances and speeds ) standing / slow traffic can be especially problematical ( but no defence ) as lights change , especially when getting shoved from behind the standard is £100 ..but seems can be upto £1000 ..but difficult to find examples of anything above the £100 ..and certainly not at the £1000 level ..so would be interesting ..

It's a totally pointless bus gate that stretches for about 100 yards. Supposedly put there to improve air quality. Yeh right, like that would make any difference. It's the most obvious cash cow going.
