Q: Can you get a parking fine in England if you park in a parking space without paying if there are 100 free parking spaces around, it's completely deserted and no cars coming in? That happened to both my father waiting for me to get something at home, and to my mate when we bought something in a shopping mall. No cars in sight. Both cases on very hot summer days. You can Musik just the same as you guys The UK has a good old mix of road markings - single yellow lines (you can stop for a maximum short period or to unload), double yellow lines (no parking at all but unloading is allowed for business), double red lines (do not stop at all), dedicated bus lanes (fines for driving through, even if empty, usually a camera or two!), cycle lanes, and much more to contend with. A lot of road markings are broken up tbh due to the absolute shitshow that is Britains pothole ridden, uncared for roads, or where gas/pipe work has been done and they havent done a great job resurfacing - you really have to be careful where and when/how long to stop Car parks in the main in the UK are ticket/pay orientated. If they have cameras and barriers, even if empty, you would be expected to pay or face a fine Some have a maximum free period (ie at a Supermarket) where you can park for 3 hours max but cannot return that day Others are free or have a free period (say an hour) but you still need a ticket For most councils, car parks are a cash cow tbh, cheap to build and maintain, non stop revenue.... They wonder why town centres are dying and people go out of town to large chain stores/giant supermarkets to shop and your local butcher/fruit and veg shops are closing.

I’m guessing you’re a paramedic/driver. What is the etiquette when you can hear blues and twos but cannot see them I ask because yesterday after leaving Derriford Hospital I entered Derriford Roundabout which is one of the busiest roundabouts in Plymouth with each junction traffic light controlled. As I waited to exit the roundabout towards Plymouth I heard an ambulance siren close by. So I slowed down even though the traffic lights were green checking my mirrors and right and left to see where the ambulance was coming from. I still couldn’t see it but the sirens were getting louder, perhaps I should have stopped but that may have caused more confusion to other drivers. Suddenly the ambulance was right up my chuff now blasting his horn at me. I continued slowly unable to move out of his way because of traffic in other lanes. He eventually overtook me as we exited the roundabout towards Plymouth. Very unnerving tbh. Also apparently if you are at lights and an emergency vehicle is attempting to get past with blues and twos you have two options do not move,in which case you can/will be fined for obstruction and if you go through the lights to let them pass ,you will also be fined for going through red lights. This has been factually checked out. If you stay put you have a defence. You can not commit an offence to let an emergency vehicle pass. If you got a fine for that you would get fined for observing the law.

It's the fucking parking fines that do my head in. Had a meeting at Staffs Uni during summer last year. They had a graduation event on and so had cordoned off all of the car parks except one. Staff told me to park in a particular spot so I did. They told me to log my reg on the tablet in reception. At reception, tablet is turned off, no receptionist present as they are essentially 'closed'. Now running late I went to my meeting - cue a £70 fine from parking eye. Being an arsey twat I refused to pay and it's now going through the courts. I now of course regret it, as I know I'll end up paying more, but I wanted to push the fuckers and waste as much of their time as possible and ramp up their legal expenses. Absolute pain in the arse. A solicitor I know told me that 'every principled person I know is poor' - very true That explains why every solicitor is rich

I picked my lad up from Stoke Station last November There were roadworks on our usual route home, so I went up College Road towards Hanley Park, as I have done many times in the past. Got a fine, as its now apparently a dedicated bus lane, they introduced it in June 2023, and hadnt issued any fines up until October Next time I collected him I looked for the signs - its the worlds smallest tiny sign by the roundabout, no fanfare, no big warnings (for something quite new and a big change!) - but had caught out nearly 10,000 people in Oct and November so you might argue the signs/warnings/notices arent quite enough...dread to think by now given the amount of train and student traffic around there. No point fighting the system, just paid the half price £35 before it jumped to £70 - but I was seething - a proper money making racket! It's a totally pointless bus gate that stretches for about 100 yards. Supposedly put there to improve air quality. Yeh right, like that would make any difference. It's the most obvious cash cow going. Particularly given the roadworks that have been ongoing at the top of college road forever and a day. Forcing the buses to use the same routes that the cars are restricted to now.

They wonder why town centres are dying and people go out of town to large chain stores/giant supermarkets to shop and your local butcher/fruit and veg shops are closing. Those time limited supermarket car parks have snuck over to shopping centre car parks in Devon. So when parking up you enter your car reg and it gives you 2 or 3 hours free parking. There is no option to pay for longer. The car parks in question range in size from a couple of dozen spaces up to much larger car parks with 200-300 spaces. Some are so large they have 3 or 4 registering machines. So why have the councils gone to the expense of installing this system, which clearly generates little if any funds because I would say that 99% of users are there for an hour or so if they are willing to negotiate the potholed roads that are the norm now. Come to think of it the money would be better spent than fixing potholes.

I once had to produce my documents when about 19 and couldn't find my license. I went to the police station and explained that I couldn't find my license but had the other documents.
He basically said- own up you don't have one and told him to check with the DVLA which he said wasn't his duty to do so and I would get a fine and 6 points on my license think he said if not back with it in 3 or 4 days
I probably sounded like a smart arse but asked him how he could put points on my license if I didn't have one according to him which he looked a bit confused about and didn't answer
Thankfully a very nice lady at the DVLA contacted them for me and explained I had one and had ordered a replacement

If you stay put you have a defence. You can not commit an offence to let an emergency vehicle pass. If you got a fine for that you would get fined for observing the law. "You should take action to let the emergency vehicle pass, but it's important to remember that you need to keep within the letter of the law in doing so. If you jump a red light to make space, you'll still be breaking the law and are likely to be prosecuted. The same goes for entering a bus lane or yellow box junction." Quote from NHS London Please avoid pulling into bus lanes or cycle lanes. The ambulance crew are trained to negotiate traffic and may look to use the bus lane to pass, and you could get in their way or even get a ticket. Do not go through a red light to try to get out of the way as you may commit an offence. If it is safe to pass the ambulance will do so. If it is not, they will wait until there is a space to pass in a safe manner. If the lane is wide enough and there’s room for the vehicle to pass you, try to move to the left, but without going forward over the white line or into a cycle lane.As an example, you could be hit with a fixed penalty notice for £100 and three penalty points on your licence for jumping a red light – even if it’s at low speed to get out of the way of an emergency vehicle. If it goes to court, the penalty could be even bigger. RAC say you get fined. www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/driving-advice/fined-for-moving-out-of-the-way-of-an-ambulance/

I meant to say that you can not commit an offence to actually move over if it's within the laws of the road. I can see where I might have caused confusion. Thanks for pulling that up.

Last parking ticket I got turned into a ccj due to my refusal to pay a parking charge for eating my McDonald's in the car park of a closed business while my engine ran. I played the long game of 6 years till it fell off and they didn't get a penny.
Makes me feel smug. Parking companies are a stain on society and cowboys.

I parked in Wrexham last year on a 'PayByPhone'-enabled carpark. The tariff board was clear, I needed to park from 6.30pm but it said that after 8pm, parking was free. So I got 2hrs parking via the App, to take me into the 'free' period, and parked until 11pm.
I got a £60 fine, and contested it. The appeal got rejected, so I requested a copy of the tariff board 3x times, and they didn't produce it. It escalated to the Ombudsman, whose name I forget, but ultimately they said that there was nothing they could do.
I asked them firstly, why I couldn't see a copy of the tariff board, and secondly, why would I only pay for 2hrs parking when I knew I wouldn't be back until late if I was trying to pull a fast one for the sake of £1.80 or so? They couldn't answer & I ended up paying it.

Did something similar, wasn't worth it. 2 hours free parking but they fined me for overstaying after an hour. First appeal was to a private company (who must be getting paid for finding you "guilty") and they rejected it. Had to take two mornings off work to travel to court and pay filing fees. I had security camera footage showing my car parked miles away up until ~90 minutes before they gave me the ticket. Luckily the judge accepted that as proof when the private appeals company said it wasn't good enough. Fuck the corrupt cunts involved in Pasadena parking fines.
