William Shakespeare's birthday today as well (460) -and I know you like a sonnet. Apparently Paul Spencer saw him on the West Holt Stage long before he made it big and McMuffin used to drink with his brother in Singapore. You're obsessed Not reciprocated 😁 Stick to Grinder Its "Grindr" actually.

It's a curiosity that England should have as its Patron Saint a Turkish chap that never set foot in England He is also the Patron Saint of Albania, Bulgaria, Ethiopia, Greece, Georgia, Portugal, Romania, Syria and Lebanon which might explain why so many of the citizens of those Countries make extraordinary efforts to get to England, unlike George obviously who couldn't be arsed. If he ever existed. Or his dragon. Though fighting imaginary adversaries is quite a good allegory for a certain brand of English Nationalism.

Maybe they could make it a public holiday? Wouldn’t that be a good way to create some sort of special feeling to the day? I’m honestly confused as to why it isn’t. Other than Ireland not sure many countries have public holidays for their patron saint. And look how well they have marketed that?! Everyone knows and a lot of non-Irish go out to party on March 17th. If England wanted to sell St George’s Day better, they absolutely could. The country, as a whole, just chooses not to care. It hasn’t cared in the 32 years I’ve been alive. The country could switch out a Bank Holiday, if too many are nearby. These are just minor excuses.

I've had my full English brekky. Double soss, double bacon, egg, beans. Fish and chips for dinner and then pop down the local later for a couple of looseners, game of arrows and watch a bit of the footy. Champion 😃

I've never known anyone celebrate St George's Day. I worked in pubs for a number of years and it was never a thing. There used to be people out for St Patrick's day dressed in their leprechaun Guinness hat's and more people would drink Guinness on that day other than that nothing.

To be fair they just like having a day off work and an opportunity to get pissed No one even thinks of the iconography To be fair they have marketed it well and it adds to their soft power as it's celebrated all over the World

There are differences mate.Patrick was a real person who really lived in Ireland, and did help spread christianity to the people. Whereas George may well never even existed. Plus the Celtic history keeps it alive and well.Add to that the English have always thought that they were better than everyone else and so we became the pomopus big brother everyone hated and loves to beat. That breeds the pathetic stiff upper lip what stops us having fun, like the rest of europe does.
