They're a decent partnership. Miles better than Wilmot. His deflection on Tuesday was bad luck but it stemmed from just being a bag of nerves. If that was Van Dijk he gets a proper foot on the ball or just leaves it.

Yet people still question Jared Dublin.

There are two distinct aspects to a statistic: 1 The measurement itself. So for example if the defence stats is based on goals conceded per minutes on the the pitch and the figures have been collected consistently and accurately the results are simply true - they are an accurate measure of what actually happened. If anyone thinks their personal subjective observations are better than the properly compiled objective stats they are an ego maniac with no understanding of selection bias. 2 How the stats are interpreted. So for example McNally and Rose might well have the second best stats for goal conceded per minutes together on the pitch but that doesn't mean they are the second best defensive partnership in the league - for example it might mean they just happened to be on the pitch when we played weaker teams. Coach's use stats to help them understand what is happening on the pitch - they don't just take them at face value. People who just reject stats out of hand and rely on their own subjective judgement will be wrong more often than someone who understands the value and limits of statistics and use them to supplement their subjective judgements. I like a stat. Point 2 is important in the Rose McNally debate. I’ve already said I think they’re ok, but goals conceded isn’t the full story. As you say, they may have played weaker teams, but also, as a team sport, there are so many other factors that can determine goals against. Goalkeeping blunders, full backs not concentrating, midfield being light weight etc.

I think it’s best to just watch the game and not base things on statistics. That said, where on earth have the statistics come from to come to this conclusion? It must be based on goals or goal scoring chances created? I guess someone forgot to tell them that's only a good thing on the other end of the pitch!

They play really well as a pair considering their age. Wilmot won't be playing once McNally is fit again McNally is toss and won't get back into this team unless Rose or Wilmot are injured

I believe it.
When they played together they’ve played pretty well and kept plenty of clean sheets.
It’s when you add Wilmot into the mix is where it turns to shit

McNally is an awful footballer. Time after time the ball came to him as spare man and he would propel it to a teammate giving him no chance to control it. Goal was perfect for this thread, both of them at fault

Rose the bastard missed an absolute sitter.
But apart from that, I thought they were both good. Must be hard playing against Championship brutes like Preston's forwards but for the most part came out on top.

I really don’t get the hype with McNally and the hate for Rose.
I’d go as far to say that Rose is probably our best CB. He’s physical, mobile, decent on the ball and a threat at set pieces.

Should have scored and asleep for the goal... But yeah he's not bad (no really) All 3 of them need a senior pro to lead They will all get better over the years as defenders generally read the game better as they get older

Goal was perfect for this thread, both of them at fault The biggest fault came from Laurent. It’s not easy to defend a cross into the six yard box. The best way to defend it is to not let the crosser have half an hour to decide where to place it.

And the cross shouldn’t have come in in the first place! He’s the tallest dwarf, that’s all.

I love statistics and passed my first exam in pure maths with stats in 1964! I used them all my working life, particularly in the 00s when I headed a business improvement team for Tata. But this is my favourite statistic: www.vantagepointsoftware.com/blog/infinite-elvis/

Like I’ve banged on many times, before the recent spell of losses (the 8 in 20) we had one of the best defensive records in the league. 7th best in fact.
The issue being we had the 3rd worst scoring record, yes we did play more defensively but that only hides the fact we don’t have a decent forward on the books.
Ennis I’ve seen better touches at youth level, energy, commitment yes, technical ability fuck no.
You just knew he was gonna fuck that clearly through pass.
Full backs and try and invest in a forward and we would be ok.
On a side note willmot was once again the weak link today
