I've brung my son up wrong.
He's just texted to say he is coming home " after lunch but before dinner "
I am ashamed. In fairness he was born in Nottingham and has never lived in Stoke-on-Trent

I used to say dinner instead of lunch. I don’t anymore because barely anyone understands what I mean and the point of language is to communicate effectively 😂

A part of my soul dies every time I have to call it lunch down south but I absolutely will never in my life call tea dinner. When people say going out for dinner I want to vomit, in fact I’m feeling ill just typing it.

Don't people usually go out for a 'dinner date' in the evenings? 🤔
I never use the word 'lunch' personally, probably because I eat when I'm hungry not when time dictates.
Dinner is also sometimes confused with supper as far as I can make out.
'Evening Meal' is the best descriptor, less confusion 🙂

However if we’re going out instead of dinner I’ll say we’re going out for a bite to eat.

I’ll always find a euphemism for ‘going out for dinner,’ going for food, bite to eat, even tea if I’m feeling crazy! It’s all quite sad really isn’t it that we don’t feel comfortable saying what we were brought up with. I think about it often.

Lunch derives from 'lump' or 'hunk' of bread.
Dinner derives from 'to dine' or the main meal of the day.
Dinner for working classes was often the midday meal as they could prepare the meal in daylight whilst the upper classes had the benefit of lighting and staff to prepare the main meal later.
'tea' was a drink accompanied by a snack - which for working classes was in the evening and the upper classes in the afternoon.
In short it's more to do with with what you're eating than when you eat it.

I’m no fan of a scratchings (shoot me down) but those Bargain Booze ones look great for fans. Grum at London Road Tavern has the best (and spiciest) selection if he’s still running it. Saw him the other week and forgot to ask. He was too busy telling me how I was punching with my ex, the leather tasseled, cockney twat!
