I've just been invited to write an article on Umbro, who are celebrating their 100th birthday. Don't know where it will end up, if it goes anywhere at all.
Anyway, simple question - has any kit we've had come anywhere close to the majesty of the late 1970s early to mid 1980s Umbro kits? I'm not saying we've not had decent kits, either through design or association with a particular season, or game or whatnot, but in simple terms, did Umbro get Stoke right more than anyone has managed to do so since?

Pretty much. But this is my all time favourite - if only because it has some of the simplicity of the Umbro one (collar, perfect shade of red) - but also the watermarked Stoke crests down the red stripes were a stroke of genius:

I loved the Le Coq Sportif shirt in our promotion season. All their gear was good quality.

Takes lots of us back to when, if your parents could afford to get u a strip/ top (I had second hand one which I tried never to take off) Stoke didn't change them every season and when they did you weren't called out by classmates for not having the latest one. So it was the iconic top ,best embroiled badge which you were proud to wear year on year, especially in Rhyl/ Blackpool on hols. Looking back it wasn't the most stylish but that's because 70s & 80s were terrible fashion for strips. Tiny skin tight shorts a nd tops made from nylon. But we were proud to own one.

Aside from the relegation pinstriped home shirt - (blue pinstriped away kit was actually ok), Umbro were great for Stoke City, especially on the retro front looking back. Certainly wouldn't be against a return to Umbro going forwards.

The Umbro kits were superb, with honourable mention to the Admiral efforts.
Also like the Fradley Homes era kits with the black diagonal sash on the away shirt, though can't remember who the manufacturer was.
Think the Admiral and Umbro logos are understated, classic pieces of design and look good in their own right, without detracting from or overpowering the shirts they designed for us.

I have it on good authority that the Fradley Homes sponsor patches are, to this day, used as gym mats by impoverished high schools in former Soviet states.

The closest we’ve come to bettering the Umbro kits were the ASICS kits from 1993-1995. They were simple and classy. However, for me having started watching stoke in 81 those early Umbro kits (even the pinstripe kits which I love) are still top of the pile. Even though the pinstripe kit is much maligned when you see it side by side with the previous Umbro kit it’s a massive leap forward in terms of a more modern looking design for the time period.

'Matchwinner' them Fradley Homes/Ansells kits were. A Scottish brand I believe.

I had a pair of boxing shorts of theirs when I was at school which I was really proud of, blue with yellow stripe down the sides and I thought I was the bees knees. Got me to the Schools ABA quarter final at the Victoria Hall. Lost because the ref (twat) docked me two points for bouncing off the ropes and hitting the other guy. The eventual winner was a lad from Carmountside school who I beat in a match later against them. I always loved boxing and kept those lovely boxing trunks for donkeys years. Umbro were famed for their boxing gear and many pro champs wore them. Boxing was later banned in schools which I thought was a bad decision.

That was a lovely kit…lovely away kit too🔴⚪️ Anything is better than Macron… Macron get an unfair bashing sometimes, but on the whole they've made some pretty decent kits for us. Unlike some of the big hitters like Adidas and Puma, Macron treated us as a prime customer - remember the League Cup 50th Anniversary shirts? They'd have really gone to town for us on a 150th anniversary kit - unlike Adidas who produced a token effort for an away shirt based on the original "Ramblers" colours.

Neil Franklin. Not sure why he’s in the photo, I guess it was to showcase the old vs new generation when they did the kit launch. Would love to see articles from the time, because I imagine they knew the kit would be divisive.

Chambo's stance 😉🤣.. covering his town hallies! Not suprised tho, there wasnt much to those red Umbro shorts! Them were the days when shorts were shorts! Remember having this kit as a Birthday present when I was a kid, the shirt, short & socks came in an Umbro presentation gift box. The days when kits weren't mass produced. & I bet there was a time when kits would have been released in kids sizes only..

I never liked the Umbro diamonds down the sleeve to be honest. This one was the best:
