CB’s have been an issue for a while now, none of them currently at the club are good enough and I’d get rid of them all in the summer if I could. The striker department is troubling as well but at least we can have a reset in the summer, to be in a position where it was Mmaee or bust is really shit. Gayle, Wesley and Campbell and their significant wages can all fuck off and hopefully we manage to replace them with someone half decent. Leris is like a Poundland version of Jacob Brown and I didn’t rate Brown so that’s indicative of just how shit he is. Dublin seems like a stats guy but as others have said where exactly did we think goals and assists were coming from when none of the attacking players that we’ve signed have put up significant goal contributions prior to joining the club. It’s just a case of limping along to the end of the season and hoping we don’t get relegated, which is absolutely wank yet again. That’s not entirely true. Stats for Mmaee (in the league): 22/23 0.5 goals per game 21/22 0.7 goals per game 20/21 0.5 goals per game Those are excellent returns hence why we’ve taken a punt on him.

You can see what they tried to do. A 433/4231 with two for every position.
GK - Travers/Bonham LB - Stevens/one of the RBs CB - Wilmot, McNally, Rose, MISSED RB - Tchamadeu, Hoever, Gooch DM - Pearson, Thompson CM - Burger, Laurent AM - Johnson, Junho W - Campbell, Haks, Vidigal, Leris ST - Mmaee, Wesley
SPARE - Baker, Gayle
It was a reasonably balanced squad, on paper at least. A mix of Winger/Inside Forward and two very different strikers to enable different approaches (an option that we badly needed last season). The problems were the lack of a dominant CB, and why get three RBs and one LB?
Then we hit the two massive problems.
1) Some of the players just aren’t very good. Of all the new players, only Burger has been any good. Junho has potential, but he’s been played quite a bit now at either LW or AM and is yet to score. I’ve said before, swap cute Korean kit for average looking and named English lad and there wouldn’t be so much excitement. Most have been forgettable, some have been garbage.
2) The biggest problem heading into the season however was the manager in charge of them. An absolute fraud who had never achieved anything with his own players was allowed to pick, or heavily influence the choice of, a TD who picked a head scout (who I could do no worse a job with Football Manager 2024 on my laptop) to help assemble the squad. We had an average (at best) group of players with a far from average manager.
The idiot chairman finally realising that our model was well behind the times then tries to catch up, whilst still being an idiot. There was only going to be one outcome.

Are people surprised? Neil had no record of assembling anything but mediocrity.
Another manager who pulled the wool over John Coates's eyes. Never ever good enough for SCFC AS SAID AT THE TIME!
StS might not be any good but we're left with another manager who has to pick up the pieces and start again. Feel for the guy.
We seem to never learn - the exact same thing happened with Rowett.

Until the recruitment right, we’ll be going round in ever decreasing circles..rinse & repeat. I agree with you completely that there’s 3 players Burger, Junho & Junior that have shown some quality and potential. The rest just aren’t good enough. We need to be very careful with some tricky fixtures coming up. We could find ourselves in the thick of a relegation scrap very quickly. I still believe we need a CB & CF…I’m not holding my breath.

No it didn't. This squad was assembled on the cheap apart from surprise, surprise the players with potential and looking the part with the possible exception of Mmaee. Even he was relatively cheap for a striker. The rest apart from Pearson were signed for free or small fees and are on one or two year deals and either leave in the summer or will be relatively easy to shift with only one year left. We will be in a far better position this summer than last, assuming we don't get relegated of course.

I've still not decided about Mmaee tbh, think there's a spark there.
Worried more about Leris and Vidigal, but they could still persuade me. I really want to like them.
Wesley seems a write-off.

Forgot to mention Cundle in my post above. Absolutely awful and contributed nothing at all. Hope Shueey isn't going to be another Neil, bringing in his own "mates" and playing them, despite appalling performances. He's done okay and can clearly see what he's trying to do, hopefully it's just being in a new team and it'll start to click soon.
