It’s not so often (lately) that we take 3 points away from home with an absolute blinder of a goal!
I swear you'll never see anything like this ever again. So watch it, drink it in

Genuinely struggling to recall us scoring a better direct free kick

It was a peach. It should really have been a left footers free kick from that angle, but fair play to Baker for whipping the ball over the wall and into the top corner. Great hit.

I called it at the time & said this is going in while it was being lined up & the wall was being walked back & set up..! Everyone around me looked at me gone out (which I totally understood!).. & whilst I was waiting to say the inevitable 'ah well', in she popped off Bakers precision arrow of a free kick shot! Not only was it a great goal, but it was timed to perfection just before the half time whistle was blown. & as Rotherham were so stubborn & resolute at the back , a set piece bolt out the blue like Baker produced was possibly our only way of knicking it today!

I said to my lad 'Baker is gonna hit this' he says 'do you reckon he'll hit the target dad?' I answered 'Probably not son, we don't score from free kicks'. Next thing we are going mental. What a bloody beautiful strike.

The ball was just behind the D and the wall just ahead of the penalty spot. Ten yards.

Liam Lawrence at home to QPR that time. What a goal that was.
Other than that. I think this was one that will live long in the memory.
What a beauty.

One of the best free kicks I have ever seen! And some people seem to want to get rid of Baker ffs! Why do you feel the need to turn a thread about an absolutely superb free kick winner from one of our players into a needless dig at your fellow Stoke fans? I mean, it's not as if Lewis Baker was playing absolutely shite for a good while before his injury is it. If Baker was playing regularly like he has since he came back from injury then no Stoke fans would be mentioning him leaving the club.

Not as far out though and nowhere near as important to as many people, including Beckham himself. I'm not trying to take owt away from Bakers free kick today mate by the way, it was beautiful 👌

The TV angle at the time it looked about 8 yards away Apologies to the ref for what I called him at the time , is no proof he does what I claimed in the heat of the moment

Look carefully where Baker places the ball….a good 12 inches behind the line the ref had sprayed. It makes a lot of difference in getting the ball over the wall. Given that the ball snuck perfectly in the top left hand corner & just under the bar. Those extra few inches, as with many things good, make all the difference to success & failure Attachment Deleted

If Baker was playing regularly like he has since he came back from injury then no Stoke fans would be mentioning him leaving the club. Wasn’t he actually injured for much of that time though and playing through the pain barrier? I don't know. My point still stands, there was no need for the sly "holier than thou" dig at others who felt his time with us was up, of which i wasn't one, I hasten to add I have or had no issue with any Stoke fan who wanted him off our books because he was playing like he wasn't arsed one bit injured or not for a long time, and after the years we've had of seeing players not give a shit, he was seemingly another in a long line at the time. What made it worse with Baker, was that we had seen his quality the season before when he first joined. Let's hope Schumacher can finally get the best out of a player, who has shown in the last 3 weeks that he can be a real asset in this division, the signs are really encouraging so far 👍

Been reading about the science behind a free kick. Not only is it important to get as much distance from the wall as possible, even a few inches extra as I pointed out in my previous post, but the positioning of the inflation valve has a big influence on the flight and bend of the ball. Apparently the valve gives the ball slight imbalance around its centre so imparting a spin by striking it off centre and the valve positioned anywhere but dead centre top or bottom will impart a greater or lesser amount of bend both vertically and horizontally. Little wonder that Schuey said Baker practices this routine day in day out in training.
