I don’t think anybody had told Baker about “ the 10 commandments “ ( only old oatcake readers will recall these ) one of them was in ref to Stoke …….. “ thou shalt not score from set pieces on the edge of the oppositions box “ …..or something along those lines, I can’t remember what number it was, ,I shall have to dig me oatcake book out ……what a top book that was !!

Although not direct this is still my favourite Stoke freekick - the mental afterwards was absolutely insane and still think a few of my ribs are still squint from smashing into the bars in the melee:

Wasn’t he actually injured for much of that time though and playing through the pain barrier? I don't know. My point still stands, there was no need for the sly "holier than thou" dig at others who felt his time with us was up, of which i wasn't one, I hasten to add I have or had no issue with any Stoke fan who wanted him off our books because he was playing like he wasn't arsed one bit injured or not for a long time, and after the years we've had of seeing players not give a shit, he was seemingly another in a long line at the time. What made it worse with Baker, was that we had seen his quality the season before when he first joined. Let's hope Schumacher can finally get the best out of a player, who has shown in the last 3 weeks that he can be a real asset in this division, the signs are really encouraging so far 👍 It wasn't a sly dig, just the truth that some fans have been calling to get rid of him for months, probably not realising the full facts that he was playing whilst having an injury that needed surgery. He is a very good player in my view and Chelsea have treated him badly just to rake in money every season! We did well to get a player this good for peanuts.

Been reading about the science behind a free kick. Not only is it important to get as much distance from the wall as possible, even a few inches extra as I pointed out in my previous post, but the positioning of the inflation valve has a big influence on the flight and bend of the ball. Apparently the valve gives the ball slight imbalance around its centre so imparting a spin by striking it off centre and the valve positioned anywhere but dead centre top or bottom will impart a greater or lesser amount of bend both vertically and horizontally. Little wonder that Schuey said Baker practices this routine day in day out in training. Further to the science of bending the ball...I got this from an article on how to do a 'banana shot', written by Pelé, in Shoot magazine circa 1970.... If you strike it off centre, with a normal follow through, the ball will bend throughout most of it's flight, which we'd call a curler I guess. But if you strike the ball in the centre with your instep and twist your foot from right to left (anti clockwise) during the follow through, the ball will go straight for most of it's flight then bend sharply towards the end of it's flight...the classic Brazilian banana shot. Takes a bit of finesse so have to practice!

Amazing free kick. Look at the keeper's starting position and the wall. Defensively they set him up to show him the other side of the goal.
Instead, Lewis backed himself (see what I nearly did there) to hit the othe top corner, where the keeper was standing.
It was hit with such bend, accuracy and sheer pace, that even though it was fairly close to him, he couldn't get it.
It brushed bar and post and hit the inside of the side netting. Almost unvelievable.
One of the best free kicks I've seen. No keeper is saving that.
Not many in The prem can do that, never mind the Champo.
As Nigel Johnson would have said, "Ahhhhbsolutely top drawer"

Genuinely struggling to recall us scoring a better direct free kick It was perfect, but my favourite is always Higginbotham's against West Ham in the FA Cup Quarterfinal!
