I wonder why now, has he done anything recently of note for charity etc, or is it for achievements in football?
Too young to see him play but have never warmed to him as an individual in interviews, or from stories from former pros on podcasts. Granted the latter may influence my thoughts.

He is involved with an anti gambling charity which is what his award is for.

He always seemed nice enough when asked for his autograph when I was a kid.

I’ve always been against these so-called honours for personalities and aging sports people. I’m fine with honours for deserving cases (common people doing good or charitable work etc) but just what have these people done for the greater good to deserve such accolades

Its a totally corrupt and abused convention

I never warmed to Peter Shilton, found him arrogant and remote, an unnecessary acquisition when we had Farmer and needed a CF. I seem to remember his form was not top notch whilst he was here and was nowhere near Bank’s level

A friend of mine has an MBE and his parents were more excited than he was

Where as John Robertson (who to this day is my favourite ever non Stoke player) was so good that I honestly think Forest wouldn't have won a single trophy at that time without him. How somebody so out of shape could make defenders look like Sunday league players was incredible. He was unplayable in that spell.

McGovern's job was to win the ball and get it to John Robertson, nothing else to think about, and that's why he was a good footballer, because that's what he did. That is a skill, i.e. only doing the job you had supposed to do, and not trying to do anything you can't do. That's where a lot of players go wrong. He simply did his job very effectively and that's why Clough used him. He could trust him.

Nothing for Lou Macari or saint Peter Unbelievable considering some of the dross that got awards I don't have any faith in the awards system and would be surprised by anyone who does. Look at the honours being handed out by Liz Truss, total corrupted system. Jobs for life, jobs for the already rich and privileged..
