theathletic.com/live-blogs/premier-league-news-live-scores-results-reaction/mk7fbhtJOLci/ygbaXJdwO7Rh/Stoke City are set to appoint Plymouth Argyle boss Steven Schumacher as their new manager. Talks to finalise compensation are under way with Plymouth, where the 39-year-old has been in charge since 2021, guiding the club to promotion from League One last season. Stoke sacked Alex Neil after a 1-0 home defeat by Sheffield Wednesday on December 9, and The Athletic reported today they had approached Plymouth to speak with Schumacher, who was granted permission to engage in an interview process. Former Birmingham head coach John Eustace has also been interviewed by Stoke. The recruitment process is being led by Stoke technical director Ricky Martin. Stoke are 19th in the Championship, three points and three places below Plymouth, and face Millwall at home on December 23.

New manager thread locked, the fat lady is about to sing Never mind the fat lady, the fat dong has spoke That's Coates's face when reading the Plymouth forum with their fans saying Stokes a shithole and he won't come here.

Hope this works out but can't help thinking it smacks of the Nathan Jones appointment. Young up & coming manager done well at a smaller club with smaller budget far less expectation. He is coming in to bigger club that has under performed for 6/7 years fans are very restless & totally pissed off. Fingers crossed it works out well because we deserve better than the previous managers have served up.

If it happens let's give the board some credit, it's a really positive appointment and shied away from the usual tried and tested. Yes it's British again, but an ambitious one at that. They deserve some brik bats at times, but not on this one. Well done.. I still feel we needed a foreign manager to go with our new look squad which was DATA driven. Nothing about another British manager tells me this appointment is data driven, this is very much another Coates decision. Are they going over the team they have appointed to make these decisions? It could explain why everything keeps going wrong, maybe too much interference from the top. I pray it works out but for now I remain sceptical.

The problem with a lot of managers is they seem to do well with players that aren't theirs then it goes to pot when they start bringing their own players in. I just want a competent manager who is good at creating a team as well as getting the best out of a bunch of players that aren't theirs. I hope Schumacher is the real deal, it's about time we got it right. Not in Alex Neil’s case as he was shit both ways To be fair he wasn't left with a great squad when he came here but seems to have ridden a few waves elsewhere.

I didn’t even realise we’d flown up the table following that point yesterday! Play offs here we come😀

I’m more excited than disappointed, but I won’t lie I was probably hoping more for a JDT or a Hassenhutl.
However, it’s a middle of the road appointment for a middling championship club, which is where we are now there’s no denying it.
Could go either way this, but I have a good feeling, I didn’t have the same feeling with Neil.

Problem we have is that if he is a success he may well jump ship for Everton at some point. It would be a nice change for someone to poach a manager from us, it's been a long time since we had a manager that other clubs actually envied. It would also mean he'd been a success here and that in turn we'd see some success, it's been a while!
Steve Cotterill was the last time we had a manager poached from us, I think? And that was more down to his reputation than what he'd done at Stoke because his time here had only just started. So the last time we had a manager poached purely on his performance with Stoke was Lou Macari back in 1993. Wow that's a long time.
