Be annoyed with whoever appointed him… He always struck me as genuine, a lot more likeable than that Scottish scrote we just sacked. It was just a job too big for him. An unforgivable decision from the board to hire him. |

The piece is more about Alex Neil, and he's naturally been asked to give his opinion, but its never a bad thing if past managers (whatever their record) are describing it as 'a great club'.

His first job was to stop us leaking goals and he succeeded in that but just couldn't get us over the line. He's entitled to his opinion and speaks well about the club and the fans (not much of that evident with some our recent managers) |

Lambert was a disastrous appointment.
But if we'd kept him on after relegation instead of bringing in Rowett, got rid of the likes of Butland/Allen and gone for a younger squad with some homegrown players potentially blooded we'd be in a much better situation then we are now (and have a lot more money in the bank as well).

The recruitment has to start to turn the corner two. Bar a couple I'd say our current incoming bunch are more miss than hit.
But yes the manager has to be 100% bang on, there is no room for manoeuvre - especially with QPR finally kicking on.

For what it’s worth, I’m sure the first season in the Championship would have been less damaging, from the perspective of costly long term signings at least, if we had stuck with him. |

I am trying to reflect objectively on Paul Lambert's tenure after the passage of time.
We were told he got the job at least in part based on a dossier (a Powerpoint presentation) he prepared for the interview with an in depth analysis of all our players. You could probably run one off on ChatGPT now but it was seen as a big deal at the time.
He won 2 games. His first game at home to Huddersfield and his last game at Swansea when both teams were already relegated ahead of the kick off.
The problem was all the games in between!
We had lots of winnable matches but somehow contrived to win none of them, but even then we were only relegated by 4 points.
It's easy to see where 4 extra points may have come from. Charlie Adam's penalty where we stepped forward to bury Brighton at the death only to see it saved and Charlie move like he was walking through treacle to convert the rebound only to be clattered from behind my Lewis Dunk, now an England player of course. I remember a late Andy Carroll header at West Ham robbing us of another 2 points.
We really should not have got relegated, but somehow we were.
I always ask myself the question would Mark Hughes have found the extra 4 points had be not been removed in January after the cup extit at lowly, as they were then, Coventry? Probably, but we will never know.

Probably, but we will never know. He actually organised us pretty well defensively, but it felt at one point like Shaqiri was literally our only threat in the final third. My gut feeling is if we'd have kept Hughes we'd have been on the end of 2/3 thrashings and continued to leak goals but we'd have contrived to win another couple of games to stay up. When you look at how bad the likes of Huddersfield were that season it's actually criminal we got relegated............. |

Probably, but we will never know. Like your analysis, I would add: My heart sunk when we were beating Leicester and a centre hit Jack Butland and went into the goal in the 70th minute. Clearly he messed up which happens under pressure. From that moment I believed we were doomed. Just one extra win under Lambert could have lifted the squad and given them that extra spur to improve results. As for Hughes saving us, I doubt it. With Lambert we were drawing matches we should have won. Under Hughes we were consistently losing matches, some by 3 or 4 goals, and winning the occasional one. I can't see where the matches under Lambert would have been won under Hughes, I'll never forget our dire performance against West Ham under Hughes, which was an utter shambles. At least Lambert gave us some semblance of shape; it just didn't work out due to players errors. The responsibility for relegation clearly lies with the owners. Most people could see Hughes had lost the plot by October/November, but those occasional wins kept him on the job, until it was obvious even to them that he had to go. Under Hughes even if we'd won a match, you knew the next one we could be hammered again, our defending was so bad. |

It was stupid timing sacking Hughes when we did. It was either sack him a month earlier and give the new bloke time to assess the squad and the window, or stick with Sparky and let him have the window.
To sack him in the window and then waste the rest of it by fannying around with getting a replacement was just about the stupidest decision that could have been made. That's not even with the gift of hindsight, it was glaringly stupid at the time.
