Has anyone noticed a lot of sites now using headlines such as ‘10 player Man City blah blah’ when reporting live scores or results. Of course this traditionally was ‘10 man’. Just wondering, does the use of the term ‘man’ offend people or something? Seems very odd but have noticed it’s become quite widespread lately.

Part of a general trend to remove sex-specific language which has been going on for years really. Linesman = assistant referee etc. I noticed in the cricket they’ve started talking about batters rather than batsmen.

I initially thought that, but then was scrolling the other headlines and there was one about the Sheffield United player that recently passed away titled ‘Sheffield United Women etc’ - so the team name specifically references gender. I have to say, I find it all very odd.

Player of the match. I don’t get it, if two men’s teams are playing then surely man of the match can’t cause any offence can it?🤷🏻♂️ Or is it that women don’t like being called women/ladies/girls/chicks/birds etc so men are making up for that by “standing in solidarity”?

Just waiting for the first ref to book someone for shouting 'man on!'. Only a matter of time.

I wonder if you can't shout "he's behind you" at the pantomime anymore?

I think calling everyone ‘it’ would be the smart move.
It puts the lotion on its skin, or it gets the hose again.
A phrase I’ll start using from now on.

Where did I say I was worried about it? Just something I hadn’t noticed before and so commented on it and asked if others had noticed. Sounds like you are way more worried about something than I am given your reaction.

If people are getting offended by things like that then they live a very very sad life is all I can say.

Language evolves over time. Always has and always will........ Agreed but the fact that some people get offended by normal everyday words is a very strange trend.

What's that ex England player called who was a pundit on itv last night for the England Scotland game, forget her name, I like her. At one point she was talking about someone being 'man marked'. Even though it was a woman marking a woman she was happy to use the old phrase, it kept it simple, and everyone knew what she meant, and nobody pulled her up on it. That was refreshing I thought, it needn't be such a big deal in some circumstances.

Sorry mate I wasn't referring to you if that's how you read it but was referring to people that do get offended by everyday words that are not offensive in the slightest.

No worries mate, there are certain words that do offend me that would have been the norm not that long ago (and that I cringe when I still hear from time to time) such as “m*ng” or “half caste” to give just a couple of examples. But calling a batsmen and batsperson in cricket for example I genuinely haven’t got a problem with it either way……..

Those words have always been wrong though mate and are offensive but words like batsman etc. should not be offending anybody imo. I think certain people will get offended by absolutely anything nowadays and I'm not sure why. Maybe they think it makes them stand out or whatever I don't know really.

Agreed but the fact that some people get offended by normal everyday words is a very strange trend. Yep, like people being offended by 'player' of the match In men's football it has always been man of the match. There has never been a reason to change it to player of the match and it has only been changed to pander to the people who get offended by absolutely anything. Just as in women's football it should be woman of the match.
