Yep, like people being offended by 'player' of the match In men's football it has always been man of the match. There has never been a reason to change it to player of the match and it has only been changed to pander to the people who get offended by absolutely anything. Just as in women's football it should be woman of the match. But so what? Do you care as much about the climate crisis, or the massive increase in child poverty under this government? I always find that the people who care so much about this sort of thing don't seem to care so much about those other far more important things

Language evolves over time. Always has and always will........ This isn't language evolving. The word "man" has been used to communicate in football and on the pitch for well over one hundred years, probably even right back to when the game started over a century and a half ago. "Player" - in some of the examples highlighted in this thread - has started to be used in just the last few clown world years.

Is that all you have got to worry about? Where did I say I was worried about it? Just something I hadn’t noticed before and so commented on it and asked if others had noticed. Sounds like you are way more worried about something than I am given your reaction. It is of no importance either way to me, which I imagine is the case with at least 90% of people

Not quite sure how you jump to that conclusion mate to be quite honest. You can have an opinion about something and also have opinions on other things at the same time you know.

More and more people are changing the language they use so yeah it’s absolutely the definition of evolving. I coach girls and we use “player of the match” and the club have started to use it on social media in the boys game as well. And very few people actually give a shit truth he told……

It's just that these days, a lot of the people who sensationalise this stuff also hold right wing views fed to them by a corporate media cabal that use it to get people to ignore the stuff that is really important. I think it's something for everyone to bear in mind the next time they feel themselves getting angry about something as unimportant as this

You're using the example of old racist undertone speak and comparing it to a man being called a man in a game of mens football. It wasn't racist when people said it back in the day - it was how people referred to non-whites. Then people and language moved on.

It’s not the using of the word player, it’s the avoidance of the word man that twists the knickers. (Mine are not particularly twisted or untwisted btw, but I can understand people's disquiet)
