I was thinking about this film last night and how I loved the long opening scene, and it got me thinking about what are the great ones/other people's favourites. So here's number 1. Best not to press quote and just go to reply with your own views/opinions:

Not so much the best, but the opening scene to Mississippi burning gets you straight involved into a great film

Saving Private Ryan blew me away. I didn't mean that pun. I knew it was all dreadful but that hammered home to me what sacrifice really means. Very humbling indeed.

They don't make them like that anymore. It has to be in my top 5.

Tropic Thunder trailers (Personal fave is Satan's Alley), and Law Abiding Citizen are two that spring to mind.

huge fan of Vanilla Sky, utterly surreal opening scene in the middle of New York, how they got the streets this empty i will never know

For me, DeNiro in ‘Heat’, he nonchalantly gets off a metro train in LA wearing medic outfit, strolls into hospital, drives away in an ambulance and you have no clue/idea how this will impact the ensuing robbery - very clever

Melancholia is a good film, dark and moody, what makes it special is you get Kirsten Dunst’s chebs in their full glory, soapy as well 👌
As you were.

Snake Eyes appreciate not everyone likes Nicholas Cage but the opening is one continous scene/one shot about 20 minutes or so and is superb the rest of the film is just OK though

Let’s be honest Star Wars the original has one of the best opening scenes ever with the star destroyer flying over the camera chasing what we thought was a large spaceship. Outside of that shout out for “from dusk till dawn”

Saving Private Ryan blew me away. I didn't mean that pun. I knew it was all dreadful but that hammered home to me what sacrifice really means. Very humbling indeed. Was going to mention that one too. Rarely have I been in a cinema where about 30 minutes have gone by in a flash as with the start of this film. Incredible stuff. Deserved all the plaudits it got.

Just has to be doesn’t it? I can’t think of any better, especially because it throws you right into the middle of the action within minutes of it starting. I can’t remember the exact figures, but I read the Omaha landing scene cost around 20% of the entire budget. It’s fantastic and absolutely tragic at the same time. Having visited Omaha beach a few times, I think the film did an amazing job of capturing the horror of the landings and the poignancy of the cemetery remarkably well.
