Anybody else middle aged and still drinking like they are 21. Or have you slowed down thinking of your health. I’m 46 now and up to recently think and drink like I always have done since a young age but a recent health scare has changed my mind dramatically. Trying to alter ways is hard when out for the night but trying to be more healthy in diet and alcohol intake.
Any tips if trying to cut down.
Not an alcoholic but like a few drinks whenever out and do admit do go OTT.

Drank a lot in my late teens and throughout my 20s. Mainly at weekends down Stoke or up Hanley. Drank frequently in my early 30s then the penny dropped one day that it wasn't doing me any favours and basically stopped over night. I'm not teetotal and still enjoy a pint every now and then but I don't drink to get pissed like I used to and only drink when I fancy one which isn't very often. When I finish work I settle down at home before bed with a cup of tea whereas a few years back it would of been a couple of cans. I don't feel like I'm missing out and it didn't take me any effort. I feel better for it and am in the same shape as I was in my mid 20s as I have more energy and time for the gym and general fitness related activities.

Being a pisshead at any age of your life is pointless, a waste of time, energy and money. A trap designed to entice imbeciles into feeding the system. Big corp brands own most of the crap that pissheads drink.
Some quality liquor, a nice well crafted beer from an independent microbrewery, or some good wine from a small volume winery. Like a fine cigar, enjoy in moderation.

Got talking to a few couples who were 'all inclusive' on holiday so would have one or two then go for lunch with one or two then a couple around the pool, couple with dinner and a couple before bed - had to arrange day trips to get out of the complex! Haven't had a beer in a month now and started playing 9 aside with 17 other fat middle aged blokes who don't melt into each other. Feels great during the day and going get back to the gym but fuck me Friday Saturday nights are boring as fuck once wee lass is in bed. Usually end up asleep by 10pm.

I still enjoy a few weekend drinks (I'm in my 40s) but I tend to spread them over a greater period of time and avoid a hangover at all costs as they now seem to drag on for a few days.

I don’t go above two drinks in any one sitting and limit that to weekends. If I’m out for a day event in the week, I won’t drink that weekend.
I drank a lot in my 20s despite working in a field where I should know better.
For me, having a dog and a flat wake up time regardless of weekday/weekend helped cut back. I’m not getting a hangover and waking up at 6 for a 1 hour dog walk. I’m very stubborn on making sure I do that, and it works. If not a dog, the gym, or just a morning walk itself.
I started cutting back with NA beers. I stopped drinking for 9 months and had NA beers in between each regular drink. Now I don’t drink beer, just cider. I do the same with kombucha.
I also engage more now in events that don’t center around drinking. Hiking with friends, going to the cinema or for coffee. That cuts the “social need” quite a lot as well.
Never too late for thinking about your health. Good on you for doing so. Hope that your health scare has been addressed and that you are well.

Have a drink every night tbh nice bottle of red I enjoy just sitting there having a lovely tipple stopped drinking lager and spirits about 20 years ago may still have a nice whiskey now and again..but the way I was heading drinking stupid amounts was only one outcome. Was up hospital cause of alcohol doctor was frank with me and basically told me I was going down a slippery slope...but he did say if you are going to drink drink red wine so I have...on the plus side stopped smoking and completely changed my eating habits

These days it's usually a pint of Cobra if we go out for an Indian, or a bottle of wine with an Italian.
I'll still do the occasional pub crawl, usually real ale stuff. Every couple of months a group of us book off a weekday afternoon and have a catch-up.
I'm fine with 6/7/8 craft beers spread out over several hours. Lager or anything gassy would finish me off though.

only my opinion mate, but when i hear these kind of things i really want to pour out loads of opinions (i wont ) so, i apologise if im being an arse. If you had health scares use that warning to fix yourself.....change everything you know is wrong. stop the drink...and ill add processed food and replace with what you know that is good along with any kind of exercise and your body will fix itself.....within a short time you and your body will be glad you have and youll wonder why you never did it years ago Right now your health is in your hands...dont leave it too late and have to rely on a stranger in the NHS and Big Pharma. if you ignore this advice have one for me

On the It's OK to not be OK thread I posted an experience I had back in 2019, all alcohol related. It's a bit more complex than that but in a nutshell that was the net result. Needless to say I don't drink any more. Second last post yesterday.

43 and still like a good piss up with the lads, cut down completely in the week, and try follow the mantra “quality over quantity”. Try knock the late nights on the head, generally if I’m in bed before 1am I’m not too bad.

Been out Friday/Saturday and this afternoon all with the wife, 3-4 pints max but she doesn’t drink and moans her sac off watching me having a few, admittedly I’d drink more if she wasn’t there.
If I’m out with mates or couples it’s a different story. 🤮

Ill have a few when catching up with friends which is usually once a month. It tends to be a Saturday we catch up and have a pub crawl and usually between 1pm and 7:30 ish 7 or 8 Ales will get drunk.
Apart from that i rarely drink. Wont drink at home. If im not seeing those said friends i don't go out at night really only to photograph wildlife in summer. In Autumn Winter ill be in gym.
Our next catch up is some Oktoberfest event at Trentham actually. (Gonna be expensive)
As im writing this my last drink was 16th July.
Doing all my wildlife stuff im up usually crack of dawn. Week nights because of work im in bed for 9:30 latest my choice. Bit later Friday Sat but wildlife activities at weekend im up anytime from 5:30 7:30 am.

I drank a lot until my early 20's, still drank but not as excessively until my late 20's and barely drink since. I have a drink if I'm on holiday, at Christmas and at New Year but never get drunk anymore. I'm barely tipsy now if I drink and can spend months without a drink. I've just grown out of it. I'm quite happy have alcohol free lager if I'm out.

2 or 3 every night soon as I’m home from work then 4 to 6 at weekends. Stuck in a rut. It doesn’t feel to much but obviously is health wise

Used to mainly only drink in social settings, never really been a 'house drinker'.
Late twenties that changed, started getting into craft beers and for the first time in my life developed a little beer podge.
Decided to do a degree in the evenings after work when I was just about to turn 30, finished that in May this year and noticed I'd hardly touched a drop in them 3 years.
Been back in the gym since June and shifted my honey-pot.
Moral of my story is I realised I was a 'passing time' drinker. Having a focus in the evening (play an instrument, sport, learn a new skill etc..) turned my drinking habits around and bar the odd couple at football or a family meal I haven't missed it one bit and feel a million times better for it.

We've got three kids under 11 and up until the first lockdown we'd have a drink every night. We wouldn't drink excessively but I looked forward to the kids going to bed to "take the edge off". I'd also eat shitloads of crisps, nuts etc every night. When I heard everyone else say they were upping their drinking, an alarm bell went off and I decided to only have a drink on Friday and Saturday night. Now I look forward to Friday, and Saturday I sometimes don't bother. Even on matchdays I rarely have more than 3 1/2 pints. As someone else has said, I have a cup of tea or two on weeknights and feel much better for it.
I now enjoy a drink when I have one. I'd worked all day in the garden today and one of the neighbours brought me a beer round and it was fantastic. Two years ago I'd have carried on into the evening. Now I can just enjoy it.
"Giving up" the booze has given me the confidence to do the same with the fags. I'm vaping at work and can now see (for the first time) a point when I won't smoke at all.
I think the fact you're thinking about it is a decent first step Waggy. If you want to cut down, set yourself a reasonable, realistic target. And if sometimes you don't manage it, don't worry about it. Start again the next day

I got to the point around 15yrs ago where I decided that the day after, hangover feeling, just wasn't worth it. I'm 49 now. I've never been one for 'ohhh I need a beer', I've always been able to take it or leave it.
I haven't been pissed, in that same amount of time.
Now I just drink in moderation. Had a large tin of IPA today watching the football on TV and that's generally, my lot these days. One does me. I'm a boring twat 🤣

Where's this place called moderation that people keep going to drink too? It's not the name of Badger's new boozer is it?

I never drank excessively, even in my teens/20's, maybe three or four pints max on Saturday nights. After I got married money was tight initially so I hardly ever drank and just got out of the habit. I started having a couple of pints again once a week in my mid 30's but it was more to be sociable than really wanting a pint. My last drink (it was actually 2 slurps of a pint before I was rushed to hospital) was on 2nd June 2012. as I had apparently developed stomach problems and eating disorders (still ongoing today) which meant I couldn't tolerate alcohol and I haven't touched a drop since, and have never missed it.

For anyone that wants to stop drinking I recommend 'Allen Carr's Easy Way to Control Alcohol'. I didn't read it but I listened to the Audio book on Audible and found it a good read/listen. I never listen to the radio in the car I either listen to audio books, podcasts or my own playlist and there are many good ones out there.
Allen Carr's Easy Way to Control Alcohol didn't necessarily tell me anything I didn't already know but I still found it useful.
I wasn't even trying to stop drinking at the time I just listened to it because it was free.
Definitely worth a go for anyone that's interested.

Rarely drink at all. Around Christmas time I'll have a few and on the occasional night out too. Only time I really drink in the house is if its maybe a sunny afternoon and I'll have a cider in the garden or something. Cannabis is my cryptonite however and I'll have a few bongs most evening. I don't get stoned or monged out from that but it takes the edge off and helps me relax. Hoping to move house soon and cut my smoking down to just weekends again if I can. Not because I'm particularly concerned about my usage but feel that doing it most evenings even in small doses isn't a good habit. For those with an alcohol dependency, I've heard of people having good results through microdosing psilocybin. Tempted to try it myself for mental health.
