I've watched the penalty over and over again and it was a clear case of Burger leaving his leg in deliberately and the Preston player made a meal of the opportunity. I've seen loads of Stoke players do the same thing as their player did and get the decision. Steino was brilliant at it. Burger should have known better. OS. Can't remember the last time we got one

It’s the inconstistancy that’s the problem. He let them waste time without any punishment. At one point Woodman held the ball for 20 seconds. How the fuck is that not an indirect FK and a yellow card? Some of these refs seem to make it up as they go along.

Referees normally start their careers refereeing kids and pub matches, they work their way through district leagues and then County and lowere league football. Before they get anyway neear the EFL, they have officiated through hundreds of games, so why oh why when a player takes a comical obvious dive, with 20,000 people breaking into laughter does a referee point to the penalty spot? Why is it that a referee is so easily conned? It has nothing to do with not having played because it is so obvious when players are taking a dive, there is certainly nothing clever about the cheating. Yet when the 20,000 see pushes in the back, arms around bodies, shirt pulling, referees miss them all. The FA need to take action against poor refereeing and referees. One of the first things the FA can do, is hand out testicle to assistant referees. Enough is enough.

The Preston handball was a penalty too, but he bottled it. The one were he smashed the ball at him from a couple of yards away? If that's the one you mean it's never a pen.

It was a penalty The best indicator was no Stoke player disputed it ….especially Burger Just looked at it again on the highlights. Burger wasn’t happy and did initially go over to the ref but unlike Pearson was disciplined enough to not get a booking. In relation to the incident itself. Looked at it 2-3 times on replay and he did stick his foot out then pulled it away at which point the Preston players flipped himself up into the air in a totally unnatural way and not in a way where he’d been clipped. If that’s a pen you may as well not even go close to an attacker in the area. We’re turning footy into a non contact sport. For what it’s worth ours wasn’t a pen for me. Ball to hand.

Brilliant. Best Preston player on the pitch. No idea what they paid for him, but we need one. He was rubbish but the Pearson yellow card was one decision he got right, stupid challenge. If Pearson deserved a yellow after 90 secs then there were plenty of Preston tackles/pushes that equally deserved the same punishment but weren’t, so a lack of consistency in favour of Preston

The worst decisions he made yesterday were the three blatant bookings for their number 10 for which he gsve one yellow card , they then take him off at haif time r mins after the last one and play the second half 11 v 11 as opposed to 10 . Completely different Game and blatantly obvious decisions or shirt pulling Ho stop play . Absolutely awful hsving said that they could have been down to 1 and thanks to Alex Jared amd Ricky’s master selection and recruitment plan we still wouldn’t have scored .

That's fine booking Pearson but he set himself up to follow the same procedure and book anything similar which he absolutely failed to do..

The two examples people are on about on here, pearsons yellow which was a yellow and the pen was a pen, you make contact and its a pen, silly from burger to even hang his leg out. I wasn’t at the match today as I was driving home from holiday but I’ve seen the penalty clip and it’s defo a penalty…no need for our player to stick out his leg…he is inviting the PNE player to dive. Inviting the player to dive is not a penalty. I am not sure what the exact rule is these days for a penalty but just because there is contact does not mean it is a penalty (in my view). Burger was naive in several ways. 1.dangling his leg out. 2. holding his hands up apologetically and 3. looking at the ref expectantly. The ref wasn't sure but I am convinced it was Burger's 'guilty' body language that did for him. There was definitely contact but I think the PNE player over emphasised the impact. If I was a ref and saw players theatrically exaggerating the contact then I would wave play on.. possibly even book them. In summary, not a penalty. Refs need to start penalizing overly dramatic falls. If they get a few wrong no problem. I have been banging the drum for simulation to be penalised for 40yrs but the reality is the FA don't care. Just treat it as part of the emotion of being a football fan. Being cheated by dodgy refs and shithouse forwards is part of the game and makes my Sat night more acceptable if I can blame both for our own shortfalls.

The past few seasons have given me the impression Stoke will not get close to a promotion/playoff spot in the Championship unless the FA implements VAR.

I would prefer them to get it wrong by not giving one than by giving one. The problem with giving a dubious one in a tight game like yesterday is that the referee is deciding the result. I think that in an instance like that where a player fall in an exaggerated way to draw attention to contact a sensible ref thinks was he going anywhere? Was he likely to get a shot away? If the answer to either is no and the contact is minimal or dubious he should not award the penalty. Leaving the game at 0 - 0 still leaves it open for both teams to win but giving a penalty when it is goalless especially in the Championship where the first goal is so important can mean the end of the game. The dives always creep into the game when a team realises that they are struggling to score. Referees must be aware of this.

Always felt aggrieved ever since John Barnes got a penalty for Liverpool against us. A yard from the byline near the edge of the area knocks it past Clarkson into touch and then falls over (to be fair I think he was caught). However, the ball was out of play and there was never a hope in hell that it would have been playable with or without Clarksons intervention. As you say, going nowhere but suddenly gets a free shot at goal from 12yds. Nonsense! I have long been an advocate of doing away with penalties. Just give a free kick where the foul occurs. I don't think it will detract from the excitement and it will stop this nonsense with refs being regularly conned into giving teams an undeserved opportunity to score.
