Ultimately AN went into today with a certain game plan and it worked.
The team selection and formation were being slaughtered in the Team News thread and on social media before the game. AN has been vindicated for his choices (this time).
Grinding out a win today is a real positive. However, I would not be massively keen on us deploying five at the back on a regular basis.

Good win, but I really hope this isn’t now the managers default tactic everytime we have a tricky looking home game. I think he played it because he's realised Hoever can't defend and we don't have a good enough right back who can be trusted to defend against the better teams. Yeah he’s a bit of a tactical conundrum is Hoever. He’s clearly a quality player but defensively he’s incredibly suspect. A lower league TAA if you like. I want him in the team, but he’s going to cost us from time to time.

I think we should stick to 433 but that means we sign a more defensive right back for the games AN feels he can't trust Hoever rather than revert to this 3 at the back nonsense that hasn't worked for the last 3 years.

But we won so surely he got it right, we need to be flexible because there are going to be times when plan A won't be the way to go like today. Plan A is for us to play our best team with the formation that suits us most. Which includes our raft of new signings, none of which were purchased with 352 in mind. Plan B/C should not superceed Plan A because Alex is shitting it against Watford. It's a honking formation to play at home. Delighted with the 3 points but sets a poor precedent for what's to come when we face any of the top 8 at HQ. I think you're wrong, 3-5-2 was very much in mind, so much so we signed two wing backs and are seemingly looking to sign another, its pretty obvious it was always going to be an option when needed and guess what today it was needed and got the result. I hope he shits it more often if it means we get the three points, who gives a shit if it's home or away if it means we get the result. Quite a big problem in the past other than an awful unbalanced squad was the fact we didn't have an alternative way of playing when needed and it looks like we finally do, its big positive for me.

Well we certainly don't have the players for Plan A then as we have no right back who can play in a back 4 and only one left back who's 33 who can play in a back 4. We got lucky today don't try and dress it up any other way.

He’s certainly not a Tony Pulis RB but you need more than an out of position CB who gets a nose bleed when he goes over the halfway line in the modern game. Hoever had a positive net contribution to the game despite being tormented second half.

I like many others thought he had got it wrong with his formation, goes to show what we know.
A solid 8.

I do think everyone is looking at the defensive side of yesterday's 3 5 2 rather than the missing Jacob Brown issue ,up top .
3 centre Half's more solid, more cover if Hoever goes AWOL defensively...all true and no doubt in AN's mind
But one of his justifications for 433 at Stoke is hard running players like Brown, can press the opposition, force mistakes, occasionally run free and be Johnny on the spot in the penalty area .
But chiquino for instance, is not going to run around for 90 mins pressing and harrying defenders into mistakes, so why go for a 433 with chiquino in it ?
Three points
One , the sale of Jacob Brown wasn't planned
Two , AN needs to replace Brown's running by September 1st
Three , I think yesterdays team sheet shows AN knows this.
We need a hard running, grafter brown/ sjw forward before the months out .
Dion Charles? AN Other? Someone!

They had a stonewall pen not given and if it wasn't for Vidigal we wouldn't have scored if we had played for 5 hours. Neither Hoever or Tymon can defend and you won't get promoted out of this league with fullbacks who can't defend. 352 / 532 bores the shit out of me every time we play it, it's such a negative formation.

Showed why he's a football manager and the rest of us aren't.
Nobody wanted that formation yesterday. All of us wanted to go for it with 4 at the back but the manager went with the right tactics.
He saw us get destroyed last week with the loss of Brown's defending from the front resulting in a barrage of chances for Ipswich. He combined that experience with the memory of the 4-0 spanking Watford gave us last year and he knew reverting to that ugly, miserable formation was the way to go.
We had good spells in the game but more importantly ground out a result and this is down to the manager. Give me an ugly 1-0 win over a 4-0 spanking any day of the week.
Draw at Millwall then win the next home game and we'll be cooking on gas.

7. We won at home, rather comfortably, to a team that is expected to do well this season. A fairly boring game but a great result. Winning is never boring. Tip tapping our way to defeat is boring.

Well it's even worse if 352 was in mind, signing 33 year old Enda Stevens as LWB and bringing last seasons left back to play RWB. The recruitment has been built around the team playing with a back 4 and any variation 433, 4231 or 4411. On top of that, if 352 was very much in the thinking it would have been deployed last week at Ipswich from the start not at home to Watford.

I think some of the comments are really harsh imho! We won and he knows he’s on a knife edge at home as if we had lost 1 0 like last year everybody would be on his back!
Well done Neil picked a formation and team and won! I think he may go that way at Millwall. People moaned about Ipswich and he changed it FFS.
It’s not the end of the window and he’s trying to get us through until then.

Contrary to most on this thread I thought it was an enjoyable keenly fought match between two teams who were giving everything. There may not have been the goals of two weeks ago but I preferred today's match because the evenly matched teams made it far more exciting and compelling I thought second half was entertaining First half was really drab

For me living on the knife edge of one goal advantage as 90 minutes approaches is entertaining even if the football is drab, which I don't think it particularly was yesterday. And if we hold on to the lead it has been enjoyable. I think watching Watford piling on the pressure and Stoke defending and blocking for their lives and knowing we had players up front who could score on the break was not as comfortable as watching us beat Rotherham but nowhere near being drab. I think the second half v Rotherham was far more boring.

I think the first half was cagey and a bit cat and mouse as both teams weighed each other up. I wouldn't say it was totally drab but we were afraid to commit forward.

8.5. Not exactly front foot football, but the right plan to win a key game.
Some of the justification for low scores on here is borderline moronic.
We have previously said that we need a manager who can change formations to beat certain teams, or have a plan B. Neil watched Watfords first 2 games, then selected a team and formation he felt would beat them. He was right. A game we lose 99% of the time last year.
Hopefully this means he’s building a squad comfortable enough to play in various systems based on opposition. Which we have been crying out for.
So many people looking for reasons to complain to suit their ongoing agenda.

7.5 - we were a bit fortunate to win that, as Watford had a stonewall pen turned down and we didn’t really work their keeper much during the game. Saying that, we are a team in transition, lots of new players in, and still not finished with our transfer business so I think he deserves some praise for going with a more pragmatic system and nullifying them. The goal was a bit of magic from Vidigal and a bit of magic was the only way we were gonna score in that game..but Neil signed the guy and put him up top so fair play to him, deserves some credit for that too

7. Got starting 11 right. Needed to get fresh legs on after 70 mins as Laurent was absolutely knackered. Could have asked Hoever to sit a bit deeper for the last minutes too.
