Not being funny guys but the shite that's posted on here, particularly on the 'Burger and Stoke Squad 23-24' threads is now getting tiresome and boring. I don't know how others are feeling but I'm finding incredibly frustrating with having to trawl through loads of crap, which quite frankly isn't funny or informative. Maybe I'm being miserable or have lost my sense of humour but I just don't get it! The Oatcake used to be so much better and it seems to be rapidly going downhill in recent weeks. Admin, please feel free to remove this thread but I think your time would be better spent by removing the pointless posts in the threads that I'm referring to. Rant over but I feel that many others are becoming increasingly pissed off with the nonsense. Sorry guys, but get a grip. The bun police are here they need to get a real job and lettuce do what we want man

I think it’s mostly the concept of an Internet message board being outdated as a format. You look on social media or Reddit as examples and the comments people like rise to the top. Here though you have to go go backwards through every single post in chronological order to feel like you are up to date with a transfer story. Which on some threads is painful, as you say. The message board format was designed when people would have a conversation and build on each others ideas in a thoughtful way. Like here for example. I’m replying to OP, because that’s what I’ve been trained to do by the sites mentioned before. But because it’s a message board, it will get lost in the ether rather than being upvoted to prominence or downvoted to death. Imagine if there were a few ITKs who people respected and would get voted to the top, they could update their posts every time they got more news etc. It’d work so much better imo thats interesting, do you know if it takes much work for a message board to have this facility? I’d imagine there would be a template for that format similar to proboards that could be used… but I think the main problems are: 1) You’d lose all the history of the board with no real way to transfer it over (I guess you could keep a stickied link to it). 2) Is it a case of better the devil you know? If you tried to start new forum on a better laid out template, but it turned out to be riddled with bugs then you’d probably lose nearly all the user base.

Considering some of the hate mongering and bigotry that's rife over on the EE, I think making a few shit jokes about Wouter Burger is the least of the board's worries tbh

Are those moaning all Vegans? If so Wouter about starting their own meatless thread. McPlant it at the top of the page for them to add whatever the burgers want. Gouranga. Or we could start threads bullying female supporters? YOU could but don't expect me to join in, narcissist. Gouranga.

If I had a gripe, there are times when I've posted a genuine football thread and its been deleted/removed by admin, yet (and I dont expect them to be monitoring every thread 24/7, they have lives) some threads degenerate into meaningless tosh (as the Burger thread), others into inane arguments where one person generally has to reply 3000 times and take the opposite viewpoint from everybody else - thats fine as one post, but to deride and comment/reply hundreds of times... The setup of the board has been the same since we moved here in 2004 from Rivals - I would love to see a rejig of the folders/setup General Stoke Board (for day to day football chatter) Matchday Board (I see this on other boards with prematch build up - would somebody write a preview?), in game chat, post match chat. Maybe Tickets and Travel can belong in each individual match too. Transfer Board (Rumours and Signings) Prediction/Competition Leagues (as described) General Board (as is but....) Puzzle Board (move all the Wordle etc stuff into its own zone) Gaming Board (dont know how often its used but if needed) Pictures & Memories Board (I like this one) Support Board El Shit Bin (probably still needed) Who actually runs the website or are the admins? Aside from Dave who I think is an admin, is there anyone else or any other staff which regularly post? I like and agree with alot of your ideas there and I've suggested some myself in thr past too which I think would be good. The forum certainly has alot more potential and a bit of modernisation wouldn't go a miss. Even if there was a cost involved, I'm sure admin could open up some donations to try and cover any costs to help modernise it.

Why not have a specific and separate 'pun/joke/being clever' thread where those so inclined can enjoy themselves without boring their fellow posters and where entries, at least, would have some relevance to the thread title. It would also bring some relief to those still interested in football topics .

It doesn't need modernising imo, it just needs people to read a thread and think "you know what, maybe 15 references to Whoppers is enough for one thread and I can spare people my comic genius this time".

Basically his logic is because people complained about the puns it made people (including him) want to do it more.... based on his logic lets hope he never sees anyone complaining about violence or such things. Or winding up farts further because they don't like people pissing around. I've no idea how they could have survived in real life if they can't spot they are being wound up. If there's something on telly you don't like do you keep watching it and moan your sack off or do you turn off?

Do you know you can click the "New" link by posts to it take you to the latest unread reply? I didn't for many years and that was a gamechanger when someone pointed it out. As for social media, Facebook and Twitter shows me so much crap I'm not interested in, where at least on a forum I can click the topics I'm interested in. It's often pun and pointless little comments that get voted up on Reddit. E.g. I used to participate in Taskmaster threads after that show was broadcast and there were often interesting and thoughtful comments, but now what gets most votes is often just a load of one-liners or even worse, two-worders. There are maybe two threads here on the football forum that are a bit overladen with puns? Like many things Stoke City-related on this forum, it's not the massive issue some are making it out to be. I've mostly stayed out of the transfer activity thread for years anyway because it's often a load of hearsay and fluff.

In reference to the punning, some of them are a chuckle, others dreadful beyond belief but the secondary gain is the long running gag, often funny in its predictability and just sheer poor taste but on occasion it is the reaction of others that transcends and elevates the gag to new heights
Though unlike Skankhunt42 southpark.fandom.com I don't do it to troll but rather to be droll

I think it’s just that the worst thing with this system is people who are annoyed by certain things, can’t avoid them at all. While one pun on Reddit tends to get voted to the top, the rest (that don’t disappear to the very bottom) tend to be replies to the most upvoted pun and they’re easy to skip past if you want to see the ‘proper’ replies. For example, this conversation will be split apart, and anyone who absolutely hates us - or more likely just thinks that 2 people having opposing opinions on the exact layout of a forum isn’t entertaining enough to read (the losers) - will have to scroll past it if they were trying to follow a different conversation etc. That said, I’m not sat here thinking your POV is completely wrong or anything… it’s not like other current systems are perfect. I think it’s a very hard thing to get right and we’ll probably be looking at completely different layouts on all the sites mentioned in 10 years time. Thanks for the new post suggestion. I’ll give it a try.

I’ll give it a try. I like seeing stuff in chronological order. It means I can follow the flow of the discussion and don't miss anything. If posts were ordered based on 'likes' alone then popular posters (not mentioning names....me) would always be at the top of each thread, which isn't fair on the rest of the board. Also, there may well be good posts by unpopular posters (not mentioning names...Badger) that get overlooked as they don't get the 'likes', and all we'll be seeing are the mainstream popular opinions over and over and not the controversial talking points or opposing views that will get left behind. I think a functionality whereby you can order a threads posts by date (as now) or by 'Popularity' (likes) could be a good compromise.

I love how “I don’t like this forum” becomes “it will lose its user base”. Like how people predict poor sales when a new shirt is not to their taste, before the shop has another record year… The board is fine and I’d assume the majority feel the same way, given it’s probably the most populated and active old-school football messageboard out there. I don’t recall ever seeing a busier one. It could be seen as outdated but to me messageboards like this are part of online fan culture that has a history now, in a similar way that paper fanzines were back in the day. I like the simple equality of the chronological ordering of replies and it’s not difficult to perfect your page search skills to sort the wheat from the chaff - although in the main I don’t think there even is that much chaff tbh, silly puns notwithstanding. I feel like this community has grown older with the board and things are *generally* discussed and debated constructively. With some notable exceptions obviously. I don’t want upvoting/downvoting, other people or algorithms deciding what’s worthy of my attention. If you do, there are a hundred other places to get it - Twitter, Instagram, myriad Facebook pages, the subreddit etc etc etc. Bugger off there and leave proboards alone 😉
