I emailed Radio Stoke after the Rotherham cup game with some criticism about the commentary so far this season, but I did try to be fair saying how Nige was a hard act to follow after so many years.
I've just received this reply :
Thanks for taking the time to give feedback on our Stoke City coverage. The views of our listeners are very important and help inform the decisions we make at the radio station.
Sometimes a change can take a short while to bed in and that may well be the case here. I know that the new members of our experienced on-air team are very excited about bringing Stoke fans match-day coverage of their team and I hope we can win you over in time.
Appreciate the note,
Arran

Not sure if it's true, but I heard he travelled to home games on train? Also there are a few Championship London teams and teams down south/East Anglia that doesn't make it such a bad base. Loads of unnecessary criticism and comments in this thread. It's like people are only just realising how good Nigel Johnson was - we were very lucky to have him for so many years. There isn't the money in most local radio that the commentators you hear every week on TV and BBC Radio 5 get. Constructive criticism is fine, and I think Sohail Sahi has improved since the first match when he did miss some action (which may have just been nerves - it was a bit OTT and can't be easy being called "The New Mr. Stoke City" to follow Nige). I think it's a tough gig getting to know a club you might not be that familiar with, I think give the guy a bit of time....... He won't get to know it living in south London.

I asked questions and offered advice but all were ignored in favour of a cut and paste job. Mr Bee who I see is on loan from BBC radio Nottingham (so probably doesn’t give a damn about Stoke/Staffs area long term anyway) was probably too busy planning his next lawn bowls meeting by the looks of his Twitter feed.

Radio Stoke knew well in advance that Nigel Johnson was leaving they could have had someone to shadow him to learn off him but no they get this guy who we’re having to endure to commentate. He’s not local like who the Vale and Crewe have for there commentaries.

Not many people associated with the club moved to Stoke-on-Trent itself, he could buy himself a nice pad in Cheshire what difference would that make?

He won't get to know it living in south London. Why does it matter where he lives, plenty of players have lived away from Stoke and that didn't seem to matter. He’s been commentating on football for some years now. Take a look at the Exeter City forum thread regarding him as their lead comms. It’s basically two years worth of complaining and moaning at how useless he is as a 90 minute club commentator lead. Embrace the new positivity surrounding the club and demand better, rather than the old ‘it’ll do’ stance that’s crippled us and the city for years.

I think part of the issue is the co-commentators.
People talk about the new commentator not knowing the club, the likes of Zakuani, Griffin etc no very little about the current set up lets be fair. I think a couple of regular more knowledgeable co-commentators would help him massively also.......

He needs to commentate on the actual game and not on the tile mine and flags or the millwall roar what ever that was meant to be, and at least get the managers name correct

Maybe some people saying he's alright are watching a stream too because he certainly isn't alright when you're relying on him to COMMENTATE on the action. I'm all for letting people settle and I'm not that bothered where he lives however, I don't want over excited commentary as the opposition attack/score etc. I would like a little Stoke bias and I don't want to here EVERY effing match that Alex Neil's got his hands down his tracksuit trousers and as for the effing mention of the Tile Mountain stand EVERY few minutes, gawd help us. There were better more suited commentators out there like the Mark bloke from Shrewsbury last season. As someone has just said, here we have the Club actually trying to be progressive and we've got to put up with dire matchday media experiences courtesy of a 'local' station who seemingly doesn't give a rat's ass. Griffin was awful too. Hadn't even genned up on our last match. Pej and Clarke moan continuously. I'll be a quivering wreck if I have to listen to this all season.

Do it from his home and save the planet then. At least he'd have to focus on the game. Sure Ange could do the pre/post match stuff (better as well - what was your favourite goal FFS).

He’s not made the best of starts has he? I think a post above has hit the nail on the head though, some of the co commentators are absolutely dire. Listening to Zakuani & Griffin is like pulling teeth. Can barely string sentences together & when they do it is like an A to Z off footballing cliches. I think he’d get away with a bit more if he had a Gleghorn or Lawrence alongside him.

All he has o do is commentate on the action instead of making the game a sideshow, dont think anybody has an issue with him as a chap, they just want a description of the action.
The fact they are having to throw out a generic response show in my mind the volume of complaints they are receiving.
All they need to do is have a word in his ear & problem solved

Is the audio stream bought from the club (when it works) the radio Stoke one? I don't know as i don't need to use it. If so maybe a complaint to the club might be better (now they are all supporter engagement etc)

Imagine receiving 100 emails about the same thing. 30 seconds copy and paste job = 50 mins vs write a 2-minute custom response to everyone = 3 1/2 hours at least. 5-minutes on each reply would take all day! What a waste of license payers money that would be. At least they make the effort to reply. I emailed the club with some feedback about the new shirts and environmental suggestions (that Malcolm Clarke pointed out should be discussed with the club), and all I got back was a generic automated confirmation that my email had been received. Nothing else.

This would have been a challenge to any sports presenter, the sheer history, knowledge and warmth Nige delivered his commentary can never be replicated. His voice was was perfect for our club and he painted the picture, with words that we could all understand and imagine over the radio. The new presenter could do well to listen to some old stoke commentaries, if he needs any from the 80/90's I have cassettes in the loft where I weirdly (as a young teenager) used to record the stoke matches from the radio, I saved over them if we lost but some bangers in there, like the 7-2 drubbing of Leeds.

Nowt wrong with taping the match chief. If it was a Sunday afternoon game it was a Double Whammy. Turn over the tape straight after for Kid Jensen’s Top 40. (Would have to be a Memorex 120 minute job though). 😉

Nb Which I've now just found on youtube.
