Yeah, that Mail article says an intiial 575. Could have been more in the end. I remember being shocked at the time. Don't suppose they were in any hurry to say they paid approaching £1m for his loan given his limited role

I know it's a big if, but, if his goals got us promoted, then it would be a snip.

Oh well - all's well that ends well PEARSON DEAL TO BOOST WAR CHEST March 29th Stephen Pearson's move to Stoke City could eventually net Derby County £2.5m. The Scottish international's on-off loan deal was finally completed yesterday morning after a confusing delay. Derby will receive a loan fee of around £500,000 and any permanent transfer would cost Stoke a further £1.5m plus add ons. Such a deal would give Derby a hefty profit on Pearson, who arrived from Celtic for £750,000 14 months ago. The decision to allow the 25-year-old to go out on loan is another clear indication of Paul Jewell's intention to shake up the Rams squad this summer for a serious challenge on the Championship. "Any money we can save now will go towards helping us come straight back up. It's not going to be hidden away to pay bills, it's going to be used as a springboard to try to get back into the Premier League," Jewell said. "I gave Stephen the option. I asked him about the move and he wanted to speak to Stoke. It's a good move for Stephen and it's a very good move for us financially. "There's a transfer fee agreed between the two clubs. If they take him, it's going to rise up to £2.5m. "Even if Stephen comes back, which he could well do, we have quite a considerable amount of money with the loan fee and the wages we will have saved on him. That money will go back in to strengthening our squad next season. "The deal is almost a no-loser for us. If we had any chance of staying up, Stephen Pearson wouldn't have gone out on loan."

He did naff all for us as well didn’t he? Pretty much all the loans did around that time of the season! Pearson, Ameobi, Bothroyd and Gallagher all didn’t really add anything. Riggot and Nash were pretty decent mind.

We could really piss Sunderland about here.
I expect they won't pay that unless they get Stewart money. Nobody is going to help them out with that surely.
Poker faces all round.

They should ban loan fees. The club pays enough by developing someone else’s talent for them. Limit each player to a maximum of three career loans, expect for non-league. Limit clubs to a maximum of three loans per age group. This stupid monopoly would soon end. I shudder to think what ridiculous price we ended up paying for the loans last season. All the while, the squad shrinks and the disposable income dries up.

Our interest in Cannon Mmaee be over?
If we sign Mmaee we will have a pool of 6 for the front three positions.
Gayle will be difficult to shift so perhaps one of Brown/Campbell to leave?
I do wonder if the plan for an out and out target man has changed unless we are looking at 4231 for a lot of games.

If we signed Cannon then Gayle and Campbell must be going because it makes no sense otherwise.
I'd normally say Nixon is talking shite but Pete has unleashed and my God it's throbbing.

Tommy Cannon, eh?
That's progress for you. Not so long ago we'd have been more likely to sign the dead one.

www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/stoke-city-boss-refuses-drawn-27424835Stoke City boss Alex Neil has refused to be drawn on his club’s interest in Everton striker Tom Cannon. Neil said he would not talk about players at other clubs but did not shoot down suggestions the Potters were exploring a move for the promising striker. "I don’t discuss other people’s players. We are looking to add more players to our squad, whether Tom is one of them or not remains to be seen, but we still have bits to add.”

I think we need another option in that position, we've seen in recent years how dire things can be when you are poor in that position. Cannon looks like he can score at this level for fun. If we need to pay a bit to have him for the year, then it's worth it. We only spent a couple of mill on mmaee

A £1 million loan fee seems extremely steep ... It does because it’s a loan. BUT If we signed a player on a 1 year deal, who had bags of potential and was maybe going to fire us up the league - I’d think of that as a good deal.
