Requirement 1: Two working legs. And if paying millions? Requirement 2: Jet engine mounted in the arse. Move on Stoke - nothing more to see here.

www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/23679553.sunderland-striker-ross-stewart-sidelined-late-september/ROSS STEWART is set to miss the first month-and-a-half of the Championship season, with Sunderland not expecting the striker to be available to return to action until late September. Stoke City, who are managed by former Sunderland boss Alex Neil, are known to be long-term admirers of the Scotsman, while Southampton are also understood to have flagged up their interest in a conversation with Black Cats officials in the last seven days. āI had a conversation with him (Stewart) this morning, and he said late September,ā said Mowbray, in an interview with BBC Newcastle in the wake of an open training session at the Stadium of Light. āNow, thatās him saying that, not the physios, but Iām sure heās had discussions with the physios about it. āGenerally, when theyāre not available to play for me, I donāt spend too much time trying to hurry them back. We focus on the players that weāve got available. But I did see him this morning, and he suggested to me the end of September. Thatās when I think he said that he hoped to be back on the grass training and fit to play. So, weāll see.ā

Making his players sound like they're some sort of freelancers who let him know when they're available for work. Bizarre. Absolutely nothing wrong with those comments. Perhaps he hadn't had chance to talk to the medical staff and wanted an update from the lad himself. I know for a fact that an ex Stoke boss had nothing to do with players unless they were available to play. They've enough to do.

It just sounded very odd - I can't really ever recall a reading/hearing a manager giving an injury update as passively as 'the player has told me it will take this long', which is why it just sounded strange when I read it. That's all.

Bill Shankly was infamous for completely blanking players who weren't fit. Remember Tommy Smith saying Shankly would just look straight through him if they met in the Anfield corridors when he was out injured.

Mowbray has been negative about the time he will be ready to play for some time now Suits his purposes to try to get to the end of the window

Another Fishpaste exclusive www.si.com/soccer/sunderland/news/exclusive-sunderland-braced-for-ross-stewart-departure-southampton-as-he-rejects-latest-contract-offerSunderland are bracing themselves to lose Ross Stewart this summer after he rejected the latest offer of a new deal, with Southampton now in a very strong position to sign him. Protracted contract talks now appear to be dead in the water, with Stewart turning down the last ā and perhaps final ā offer earlier this month. That has left Southampton in prime position to land the striker, with the 27-year-old understood to be very keen to a move to the south coast club with Sunderland finding themselves unable to compete with the wages being mentioned elsewhere.

I Stewart is dead in the water for us, I don't think we can afford to wait until he is fit, I think we have to hit the ground running, for once..šŖ

I'm less excited by the prospect of Stewart signing than any other player we've been linked with...... We must have all the data on his injury but it would be a massive gamble. Saints who will have money to burn ( compared to us) clearly donāt think itās a gamble worth taking.

You can literally smell the desperation in that article about the likelihood of him coming here.
Sunderland fans are funny. Their self importance sets themselves up for a fall time and again. The meltdown when Neil left for us was all of their own bigheaded and arrogant making.

Maybe the player doesnāt want to go to Southampton Thatās quite possible especially as him and Neil seem to have a massive bromance going on. Still doesnāt make it any less of a gamble for us though. Thatās not to say I wouldnāt like a fit and firing Stewart leading our frontline. So if weāre happy to take that risk who am I to argue.

The meltdown when Neil left for us was all of their own bigheaded and arrogant making. I only know 3 Sunderland fans so itās hardly a representative sample but youāre right all 3 are massive whoppers each with a humongous chip on both shoulders. Theyāre the biggest club in the world donāt you know? When in reality theyāre nowhere near the size of their nearest neighbour. That must rankle. Having said that Haway seems a decent enough youth. On here anyway.

On here anyway. Yes, you'd have thought a good dose of third tier football would have reset the bar but it only seems to have made them worse. Like you say though, playing second fiddle to your nearest and fiercest neighbours must pinch a bit, especially with those huge, huge crowds.

I can see us going for him in January The problem weāve got is if we donāt take the risk on him now by January if heās back fit and firing bigger and richer clubs will blow us out of the water. Iām glad itās not me whoās got to make that decision. You know itāll go horribly wrong whatever we decide š¢ Itās the Stoke way.

We should go all in for Cannon The only benefit I can see is we will own a striker if he goes down the Stewart route. Assuming Wesley would be off and Cannon to be a million pound loan. It does smell of one last payday to me though.
