Mark Chamberlain - my first Stoke City hero. Yep the same. Him & George Berry in equal measure for completely different reasons. Was gutted when Chambo left us for Sheff Weds, it was my first fan feeling of loss when a great player no longer wears your teams kit. Haven't been many over the years that I've really fan mourned the departure of but he was definitely the first. Followed by Beagrie when he went to Everton for Β£750k. Notable mentions also for when Steino left to go Chelsea, Bertie to Barnsley (still doesnt sound right now, why would you?!), Sheron to QPR through to Arnie leaving us for West Ham.

I really do hope we get Umbro back as kit manufacturers in the hope they create us an updated version of this absolute classic. That kit is everything a Stoke kit should be. Nothing to fancy or flash, just distinctive & cool looking.

Can imagine he was a class player in the red and white to watch live

My favourite all time stoke player. When the Brittania stadium changed to the bet 365 all the big glass pictures of famous stoke players displayed on the walls were auctioned off. I managed to win the Mark Chamberlain picture. 3 foot by 2 so a fabulous item.

Kavanagh and Thorne to Cardiff were the first departures to ever really bother me. Strangely, the usually very accurate Football Manager rates Chamberlain as a very good coach. I always hire him. Yet according to Wikipedia heβs not had much of a coaching career.

Leaving to go anywhere at that time would have been a hard pill to swallow, but the fact both went to a team who were at the time our arch enemies was another big blow. & then beyond that, Thorney banging a hatrick in for Cardiff against us at the Britannia was awful to watch right in front of us, especially as Thorney really looked guilty for putting us through it!

I was pre school when he left Stoke so sadly have no memories of him playing. But I did have this episode of The Sooty Show on tape which Mark Chamberlain guest stars in and I vividly remember my dad telling me he played for Stoke. I'd been to a Stoke match and I knew that my parents supported them but I was just a year or two too young to properly know what was going on.
Skip to 10 minutes for Chambo's segment.

Can you imagine signing a winger from the lowest tier of the league then seeing him destroy the England left back in his first game?
It will never happen again.
Chambo was absolute quality. Electric!

Played with him for the county and other teams. Lovely footballer and very humble with it. Injuries limited what could have been a stellar career

I stood on the Boothen End & you could hear the crowd shouting "Give it him" when someone had the ball. The ball would go to Chambo & he didn't need any help to get to the other end & cross the ball. He was fast, clever, had a good shot on him & could cross the ball better than most. He's my favourite player, & I've been following Stoke since the 1940's. He could have played for Brazil, & not been out of place.

Never saw Mark Chamberlain play for Stoke but recall Stoke fans singing his name during a match at The Vic against Portsmouth; there may have been talk of him coming back when Alan Ball (who signed him for Pompey) took over at Stoke.
Thought it was a night match but could have been this one:
13 January 1990 Portsmouth H 1β2 12,051 Sandford 70'

Stoke City βHe was sold to local rivals Stoke City in August 1982, along with Mark Harrison for a combined fee of Β£180,000. His brother also made the switch later in the season. Asked if this move caused him to receive any "stick" from his friends, he replied: "No not really. Mind you I wouldn't, I didn't really have any mates."β en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Chamberlain
