I just watched it all through.
While he is too proud to admit it I think he is embarrassed by what he has served up to date.
It's nowhere in his psyche to say so but he must be utterly crestfallen.

Like most Scots, he talks a good game. Going into next season he can have zero excuses, he’s got the chance (and the money) to shape his own squad. But it sounds to me like he’s already preparing his excuses of ‘it’s a massive overhaul at any level / it will take time to gel’. I don’t buy it. For me if we are still playing this absolute garbage particularly at home 10 games into next season he needs to go. That last line reads scarily similar to how the club has been run for the last 5/6 years. It's been proven to fail. We either need to sack him now or stick with him longer term regardless. We cannot keep lurching from one Coates lucky dip to another with a rebuild each time. It's killing the club from the inside out. I don’t think it’s that black and white. If he doesn’t get a tune out of the side next season he should go. Hopefully we’re due some luck and get a manager that clicks for us sooner rather than later. You’ve got to hope the board are starting to realise their own recruitment model isn’t working and are looking to go in a different direction next time around. AN isn’t a likeable chap by any standards, that will count against him if we start the season poorly. For me the sooner he goes the better, wasn’t happy with him from the beginning.

He talks a lot of nonsense doesn’t he? If you actually properly listen he doesn’t really say anything of much meaning, and to cap it off, almost washes his hands of this season because he didn’t have the ‘tools’ he needed to do the job. I’d like to see him hold his hands up and admit we’ve underperformed, as evidenced by the shit record since he came in, but that he has a plan on how we can address it. Someone with a willingness to take accountability would be nice for a change instead of constantly defending and deflecting

We will soon see if he's full of shit with the big talk of getting players in.

Yeah - Powell will make a difference. Would imagine the pre-Covid contract he signed on summer 2019 wages will go a very long way in summer 2023. Didn't Clucas basically cut his wages significantly - but extend his contract by 12 months. It will still be a significant bit of room created though. I think MON claimed Jagielka was on one of the lowest wages in the squad, and was basically just carrying on playing because he enjoyed it and not because we were paying him a big wage. But every little helps. If we could get rid of Gayle, that'd be huge, but hard to see how. Mind you, when you look at the perceived financial state of teams in this league, even a modest spend-up will really differentiate us from the bulk of the league this summer. Even West Brom seem to be in the shit. Can only really see maybe Bristol City and Sunderland, and definitely Hull and Ipswich throwing much around. Of the parachuters, maybe Watford and Norwich will be competitive, but they don't seem to be set for anything extravagant. Southampton, Everton, Leeds, Forest should all be challenging, but you never know what state they're going to be in. At least a couple of them could be in a mess. Don't forget Leicester, I think they'd be well equipped to go back up and would be able to generate spends....... Is that after they pay back the 100m loan placed against future TV revenue

That isn't nonsense and it isn't deflecting - it's just true. You could argue that he should have been able to get that squad to play his system but the fact is he couldn't and it only worked when he got the loanees in in January. The accountability for what happened this season lies with John Coates for sacking O'Neill When he did and bringing in a manager with a completely different approach. The accountability for next season rests with Neil because it will be his squad. And in the interview he said he would take full responsibility for what his squad achieved. Why the hell should he take responsibility for the situation he inherited - it wasn't his fault he was appointed when he was and it wasn't his fault he inherited a group of players clearly unsuited to his style of play.

Because he is in charge. He understood the squad when he took the job (or should have) and was allowed to bring in half a team in January, which didn’t lead to anything better over the course of the half a season. He’s there to manage players. If he fails to get a tune out of them, he’s failing at his job and should take responsibility for it. Just like the players seem to be, AN is quick to wash any responsibility from his hands and just idle his way through the season.

I see what you are saying but there is no reason at all why an improvement wasn't possible with the existing squad. Roy Hodgson rocked up at Palace 6 weeks ago, inherited a team that had not won since before Xmas, and rattled off 3 wins on the trot. There's much more to management than firing everyone you have and bringing in a whole new team, no one gets to do that, in any walk of life.

When you see a 74 year old Neil Warnock go in to Huddersfield and turn them around from where they were, with a 40% win rate then i'm afraid all bets are off in excuse land. A defeat at Watford and a last day win for Huddersfield will see them end the season with the same amount of wins as us. Pretty dreadful really and this manager is at the centre of it. Let's just hope this summer and his great reset can bring about a change in fortunes.

He should have done much better than he has True However he's over produced at Norwich, PNE (regular top 10 finishes with bottom 6 budget) and Sunderland but underperformed here really should have done better, top half would have been a reasonable improvement So the question is can he achieve more, much more, given the huge turnaround in players coupled with probably the 4h biggest transfer budget in the division this summer? Imho it's impossible to say either way atm Edit: 7 signings? Thought it was 5?

There’s zero evidence that he is the man for the job. Moderate success in the past does not equate to success in the present. Other than the brief purple patch, which completely defies understanding, the second half of the season was as dismal as the first. Whatever critical abilities he’s lacking, he’s lacking them big time. I hate to think who he’s going to bring in with all the millions Idiot John is going to give him. Starting with a 30 year old left back who hasn’t been able to get a game for a couple of years is NOT a good sign.
