Southgate his getting the results and his liked by his players . We are looking good but still need marginal improvements by july 2024 . I think he needs to consider , what sort of players harry maguire and kalvin phillips will be by july 2024 . Port vale players , by the look of it ! italy and the ukraine are out of the way , we need to start blooding a couple of players for 2024 now . I point blank refuse to believe , we don't have young players who will be quicker , sharper and more on it , than phillips and maguire , in 15 months time Phillips is 27,hardly a veteran given his style of play he might fade early in his 30s unless he adapts but 2024 shouldn't be an issue McGuire isn't reliant on pace, for sure, no reason he can't be at the same level for 2026 never mind 2024 All the same there has to be scope for blooding more youngsters, something Southgate has continually done, in the qualifiers and in the next Nations League games when they come along

Heard an interesting stat the other day, but not verified it.
Jimmy Greaves was England’s designated penalty taker from 1957-67. During that period England were NEVER awarded a spot kick !
If true, and I have no reason to doubt it, you have to wonder what his final England tariff might have been . ?

Given the lower number of international games then you would still probably expect at least 5 or 6 penalties

When we got the first penno v Cameroon in 1990 it was the first we'd had for several years.

He'll doubtless say there's more than a grain of truth in that and it merely endorses what he's been saying.

Penalties definitely seem to have exploded recently. Don't know if the same pattern holds up in league football. Looks like England penalties in the 70s and 80s were very rare events. 15 penalties in over 200 games Whereas they've got 17 in the last 41 games in the 2020s. www.englandstats.com/penalties.php1950s 14 (84 games) 1:6 1960s 16 (99) 1:6 1970s 09 (98) 1:11 1980s 06 (114) 1:19 1990s 16 (111) 1:7 2000s 15 (117) 1:8 2010s 27 (118) 1:4 2020s 17 (41) 1:2.5

As long as you've got an option to run in behind like Saka, Rashford and Sterling in the team then Kane is the perfect striker and can't for the life of me see the argument to drop him. However, if you're playing Grealish and Foden wide then I'd want a different profile of centre forward. I'm not sure we have that though currently.

Most of the top teams just go all out attack now which results in more play in the opposition area which results in more penalties.
The change of style at the top of the game been even more noticeable in the Champions League over past 2 to 3 years where home advantage and two legs have not really mattered because all the top teams just go out all attack in all games now. No sitting back hoping to get 0-0 or sneak a goal when they play away from home, they just go for it
