Pound for pound whelan was the best £500k we ever spent I don't know which other players cost an even £500k but I would've thought that £75k for Gordon Banks, was a much better value 'Pound for Pound' deal. Then there's Alan Hudson at £250k a faraway better player than Whelan. Terry Conroy from Glentoran(?)..etc. Glen Whelan is an also ran in the best value ratings. IMO of course. All relative I guess isn’t it. Those fees for Banks and Hudson were a lot of money for the time. Fuller a better £500k than Whelan for my money but both tremendous value.

Whelan was nowhere near the class of the other players mentioned here. More a typical Pulis foot-soldier.

Pearson is quality. He’s had a fantastic impact.
But.
A handful of Championship games for a team under virtually zero pressure.
Compared to a player who was an integral part of our only team promoted to the Prem. And then an integral part of the team that maintained that status and produced some of the most memorable seasons ever for our club.
Really?

But Pearson is 28. Running out of time if he wants to get near Whelans stats. PS I really like and rate Pearson.

Whelan was a bang average player that had a career boost thanks to Pulis (a la Sidibe etc). Not knocking it, it was our identity at the time, but we had a tight well-drilled unit made up mostly of players with a very specific task who wouldn't have had a sniff at another Prem team. Whelan (eventually) fit the Pulis mould, did a job for Stoke, and got a good few Prem appearances under his belt, but he would not have troubled the squad of any other team at that higher level. Saying that, I dont think Pearson is Prem level either, but he is a far more dynamic and influential player than Whelan ever was - thats obvious to all but the blinkered.

He's the 10th most capped player for Ireland, with nearly 300 games in the Prem (under both Pulis and Hughes). Clearly not bang average and it wasn't just because he fitted in with Pulis's tactics.

Wednesday supporters rated him. Bang average is such an unfair description of him.

If we could just return to Pearson’s impact.
He has started 8 games.
We have won 5 and drawn 2.
Even Stan and Huddy didn’t have that impact following their transfers to us.

Splitting hairs but Pearson probably has a bigger spread of influence across the pitch .
I remember once Bobby Charlton was pressed to name a favourite out of Brian Robson,Paul scholes and Roy Keane ( all brilliant) . He answered Roy Keane because his influence spread to every corner of the pitch. Interesting way of looking at it , especially as Robson was a hugely influencial player too.
AN remarked once that something that impresses him about jags is that he tries to raise the game of those around him, rather than just playing well himself. AN thought modern younger players tend to me more self centered and focus on themselves as a generalisation.
Pearson's influence as spread to every corner of the pitch for this Stoke side , so I would say he edges it over Whelan.
But both great players .

Describing Glen as a 'bang average player' suggests that you don't understand the different contributions the eleven players on the pitch make to the team. Some players catch the eye because of their clever technique or their ability to whack in some spectacular long shots. But that's not how football works. It's about complementarity and making the other ten players more effective. Compare Matty Etherington with Tunchay. Both equally talented. One lifted the team massively, one was largely ineffective.
