Wouldn’t have thought he could’ve done any worse than O’Shea. He knows how to defend and played with some of the best.

If I were JC I'd try to persuade Tony Scholes to come out of semi-retirement at the Premier league and rejoin the club as Chief Executive. I feel like we've been pretty much rudderless since Scholesy left town. Jesus wept

He’s got no real experience or qualifications to walk into our setup - as much as I’d like to see him there and succeed, he would probably need to start with the academy.
Delap had more experience than Ryan and sadly didn’t move the club on at all.

Delap had more experience than Ryan and sadly didn’t move the club on at all. Ryan has the qualifications and everyone has to start somewhere. He can’t do much worse than those in charge of our younger age groups in recent years. Apart from Tom Edwards not many have made an impression at first team level.

There's nothing not to like about this is there?
He's got his badges.
He was working at a PL academy last year.
Been coaching mens football for a bit.
Club legend.
Ace.
Bloody good luck to him!

Nice to see Ryan back. Hopefully he can have a similar impact as a coach as he did as a player

It's easy to miss something on these resurrected threads from a long time ago. Is there something somewhere about him coming back to us? Why is everybody taking it as a given?

From someone who has seen Ryan coaching from twenty yards away for a decent period of time, I can say that the fact he's a Stoke legend doesn't come into it - he's a bloody good coach, with every badge going.

Delap had more experience than Ryan and sadly didn’t move the club on at all. Apart from all his coaching badges, what qualifications should he have that he’s missing? Some experience of being a manager or coach. He’s been appointed into the right job now - but it’s too common that players get big jobs too soon (Lampard / Gerrard were two of the near players in the world and both failed when given too much too soon. They should’ve started at Crewe and worked their way up - or be an assistant for a while. Surprisingly John Terry is doing it properly). Most stoke fans want Alex Neil to vacate and Ryan to move directly in. With Huth and Walters as his assistants. Whelan somehow involved too. Delap was a club legend and I love the guy but he was never right for us in the capacity he was given.

Delap was coaching at Derby and very highly respected as their u21 manager.
