The bloke is a legend. There's no words for it. I vividly remember back in 2002 being sat at home in my living room listening the the second leg of the Cardiff play-off game in the radio as a 9 year old boy, sat in between my Dad and and Grandad. As the game wore on my dad had managed to persuade my mum to let me stay up on a school night to listen to the match, my dad still believed we could get something from the game. I remember us levelling the aggregate score in the final few mins of the 90 and us all leaping up off the sofa bouncing round the living room to the soundtrack of Nige. As the final whistle went I could see the glaring look of my mum summoning me to bed, cue my dad and grandad persuading her to let me listen to extra time (no doubt persuaded by the fact that we had lost my nan in February 2002, and was just pleased to see her father in law happy again.) We resumed our places back on the sofa to listen to extra time and my grandad nipped to the kitchen to cheekily get me a glass of lemonade. Anyway when the winning goal went in we all left up with more joy and I remember the perplexed on my Grandad's face when through the noise of the jumping 9 year old cheering he could hear Nige saying that it deflected of Oluare's backside! In short 6 weeks later my Grandad passed away and one of the last but arguably best memories I have of my grandad was completely sound tracked by Nige. Even 20 years on when I hear the commentary clip back I can't help but smile at the memory it brings back of me, my dad and my grandad bouncing round our living room at the sound of radio commentary. And for that memory alone I will always be grateful for the voice of Nigel Johnson over the past 50 old years! Someone needs to ensure Nige gets to read this.

Saying how useless he is. They've gone quiet for the moment, but you won't have to look far for the renowned Oatcake Corps of Journalists who loved to belittle him. I’ve not seen that, in fairness he probably should’ve retired before now given the gaffs he makes now weekly but he’s been a fantastic commentator for decades and has had a very successful career doing it. I wish him all the best in his retirement.

Many thanks Nige for all of your hard work over the years. Gawd knows there've been highs but you've had to sit through many lows. I'll miss the Nige-isms and the name mix ups but who cares about such trivia ! I'm sure that you'll be keeping a beady eye on the proceedings. Have a fun and relaxing retirement. Let's hope that the lads can give you a win and a high to go out on! GOARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRN STOKE!

Excellent (and moving) post, and a good illustration of how our love of our club sometimes reflects our love for our family (especially between blokes!). Nigel just got a mention on BBC Final Score - lovely touch.

As much as I've gently poked fun at Nige over the last couple of years, it truly was quite emotional hearing him say "and for my final time, the final score is..."
It really is going to be very weird hearing anyone but Nige wax lyrical about The Potters (although as a side note I appreciated that Ange picked up the baton and used "stockings" the other week when describing the kit, which was nice. Keep it up Ange, you have Nige's legacy to uphold!)
A great man who has served us supporters brilliantly for many, many years and shared the passion for the club that we all have. Yes, it was time to go but he can go knowing he did the club proud for over half a century and it will be weird him just not being around. Thanks, Nige. A legend and a gent and,in your own words, "there's no doubt about that!"

Nigel does not read the Oatcake but is aware of the outpouring of affection for him on this message board in the last few days and asked me to thank everyone for the best wishes and kind words. Like many of you, I grew up listening to Nige and it has been an honour to work along side him in recent years, but more importantly to be able to call him a friend. He'll be missed and will be a very tough act to follow.

He's drove me crackers the last few years getting mixed up with different players, and I too have poked a bit at it, but like you say he's an institution and it's easy to forget how long he's been around. In my lifetime there has only been him as the Stoke City commentator. Not just from a football sense, it will be interesting to see where local radio goes with regards to sport. It might be a sad change in direction in the future. I hope it isn't and I look forward to finding the next Nigel Johnson for the next generation of Stoke supporters.

There were more in the stadium clapping Nigel (thoroughly deserved) than stayed behind for the lap of appreciation. Says everything really.

Surreal hearing Nige commentate on Stein and Gleghorn goals like it was only yesterday.

It's been wonderful reading and hearing some of the lovely comments about Nige. The club gave him a great send off and that was superb. I was very sad hearing him for the last time but all good things end at some time and like many, many others, I share the beautiful sentiments about our legend. Have a super retirement Nige and thanks you for everything.
Os doffs flat cap to a true Stoke City legend,

I have to say listening to that made me well up😳Brilliant compilation The clear excitement and affection in his voice when those goals go in is a joy. Just a shame there’s been nothing to spark that enthusiasm since relegation. You could hear him on Saturday willing the ball into the net for one final goal. Alas our spineless wankers didn’t turn up

'come back from the dead' Thats what we need to do Anyway Nigel is the best commentator ever on Radio Stoke Yes his age is showing and the mistakes have taken over but that's not what he should be remembered for

Just collapsed into a chuckling fit at the memory of how he sidestepped a cancelling by changing "handbags" to "hands banging and banging" a season or two ago

I listened to RS this morning and one caller even said bring TP back????? The club is crying out for a coach and a DoF
