I've been talked into getting tickets for the Watford match by my nippers. Gutted I'll be missing Nige on commentary. <thinks> what's the WiFi coverage like at Vicarage Road?

Lump in the throat stuff, Brought back many memories of listening to his commentary on Radio Stoke with my late Grandad.

Lovely footage ..
For much of his career I’ve been fortunate to be at the games myself , so seldom if ever listened to his commentaries, save an occasional post match summary or interview .. but I know to thousands of Stokies young and old unable to make the game for whatever reason he was their vital link to the club we all love
Going the game your friends and fellow fans present share your highs and lows ..celebrating the good times , and perhaps more tellingly understanding the pain of the lows , at times forming a very special bond and memories … for those back at home Nige was your matchday friend and so can totally understand many will be fiercely protective of him and miss him deeply.
Enjoy your retirement

The bloke is a legend. There's no words for it.
I vividly remember back in 2002 being sat at home in my living room listening the the second leg of the Cardiff play-off game in the radio as a 9 year old boy, sat in between my Dad and and Grandad. As the game wore on my dad had managed to persuade my mum to let me stay up on a school night to listen to the match, my dad still believed we could get something from the game. I remember us levelling the aggregate score in the final few mins of the 90 and us all leaping up off the sofa bouncing round the living room to the soundtrack of Nige. As the final whistle went I could see the glaring look of my mum summoning me to bed, cue my dad and grandad persuading her to let me listen to extra time (no doubt persuaded by the fact that we had lost my nan in February 2002, and was just pleased to see her father in law happy again.)
We resumed our places back on the sofa to listen to extra time and my grandad nipped to the kitchen to cheekily get me a glass of lemonade. Anyway when the winning goal went in we all left up with more joy and I remember the perplexed on my Grandad's face when through the noise of the jumping 9 year old cheering he could hear Nige saying that it deflected of Oluare's backside!
In short 6 weeks later my Grandad passed away and one of the last but arguably best memories I have of my grandad was completely sound tracked by Nige. Even 20 years on when I hear the commentary clip back I can't help but smile at the memory it brings back of me, my dad and my grandad bouncing round our living room at the sound of radio commentary.
And for that memory alone I will always be grateful for the voice of Nigel Johnson over the past 50 old years!

Superb piece.
The voice of the matches I couldn't get to.
The guillotine is falling on the head master.
By his own choice.
Respect, Sir Nigel.

A good watch and classy from the club.
You have to smile when he was talking about painting pictures of the game to those in an armchair. I always thought they must see a different game than I was at with at least five different players than we had on the pitch. Invariably when I get home from the match and my old man tells me he heard on Radio Stoke we clearly didn't experience the same match. My absolute favourite memory was when for some unknown reason he laid into students and their grants then pulled himself back from the brink and seamlessly carried on commentary in classic Alan Partridge style.
A well deserved retirement 👏 Mr Stoke City, you supplied the voice over on some of my favourite days. End of an era.

Cardiff V Stoke Play Off commentary from Nige on this clip: Nigels sublime commentary 'stoke have scored ohh stoke have scored' it really meant something to him with being a fan. Also just off topic how quickly they kicked off again back then no over celebrating abd 5 minutes before they made their way back to kick off just watch any older matches to see score straight back to kick off fans still celebrating abd match back on.
