Has there ever been another instance where the winning team has lost one of their opening games to a minnow (and it wasn't a dead rubber either) I know Spain lost to Switzerland in 2010 but the Swiss are a reasonable side Think West Germany got twatted 8-3 by Hungary in ‘54 but then beat them in the final. Hungary were the favourites though so not the same.

Once Argentina got going you can imagine them using that defeat to spur themselves on, also knowing that they don't lose that many, so that's our defeat done type thing.

Hungary (Puskas etc) were the best side in the world then, maybe the best side not to have won the trophy. That final defeat may even have been their first defeat in years.

I guess it might have been a completely different game but I can't get past the feeling that an England side in that final would have lost tamely to Argentina or crumbled vs a rejuvenated France.

I'm going watch Elf at cinema as hadn't realised it was 3pm kick off but not really bothered. Will watch highlights when get in. Well that was a genius decision knobhead! Tried not find out the score dodging folk speaking about it in McDonald's- get to the table wife blabs the fucking score and Argentina win on penos! Good job a 4 year old joined in singing 'Santa Claus is coming to town' at the cinema or I'd have a proper cob on.

They've only lost once in 40 odd games, that one to the Saudis. Crazy stuff.

Argentina lost to Italy in 78 but not the opening game. Bettega scored.
Italy in 82 failed to win in their first 3 games

Yeah, I didn’t read your post properly, apologies. No probs. East Germany beating the West was a good shout- and Argentina nearly did it in Italia 90, lost to 9 man Cameroon in their opening match but made the Final

Great final despite it involving probably my least 2 favourite teams. Ive no time for Argentina but glad Messi will end his career with a world cup winners medal.

Belgium beat Argentina opening game in 82 which was a bit of a shock. Argentina didn't make the final. The game wasn't shown on TV due to the Falklands seem to remember. Argentina were second faves to win the tournament
