We not only had OBPUs but also a couple of IBPUs (Inter-Board Piss Ups) with a few Vale fans believe it or not. It was quite common in the mid/late 90s to go on each other's message boards and take the piss without it always getting nasty.

I read fenetre but only started posting on Rivals It was decent until Sky bought it ..then the software went to shit! We moved here temporarily, went back after promises of fixes, then gave up and came back here Aside from brown wings (which was in the middle of its Rivals stint!), some legendary MCF74 pre match previews, IlfordDave/DaveAle, and some top people who I met many times at Delilahs, at Oatcake Occassionals inter message board matches, OBPUs, and some great rival team posters who were good folk Obvs some utter knobbers too over the years :-D Ilford Dave is a driving instructor now

I was a regular poster on the old board, going right back to the fenetre days. Can't remember the first ever thread but it was a very different experience back in those days. OldStokie had a bit of a thing going on with a Vale fan who was obsessed with Steve Brooker. The legendary valiantitus. But quite a while after the early days of The Oatcake. Not enough questions have been asked about the OldStokie. For a start, he wasn't even that old. Early catfish.

It was probably started by Bayern. Yes, and he then went on to post 83% of comments on that first thread!

Good find 👍 I never paid much attention as no interest in Vale at all but his odd comment can remember and assumed he was a bit of a wind up character. 😁 Didn't he claim they got bigger crowds but we doctored ours or similar and Vale crowds didn't include 5000 odd season tickets ? There were 2 very angry Crewe fans, bizarrely was out in Nantwich, maybe Chester with someone on here , forget who and this Crewe bloke was boasting on how he posted on here , not realising we were Stoke fans and read the board and saying we were all this and that etc. He used to message people calling them all kinds of names. He even started chanting 'we hate Stoke' after a few in the pub. We just ran with it and said nothing. He looked like Kenny Everett's lovechild

Biggest change there used to be regular 'bants' with fans of other clubs.
There were direct links on the home page of the old board to the boards of all the other clubs in our division and no registration process.
So for example ahead of the Preston match last weekend there would have been a message on here something like this...
Subject: Your visit to Deepdale From: PNE Dave Tell your trouble makers to have a double dose of their medication before they turn up at our place on Saturday.

Reading (or attempting rather) that match report hurts my fucking head
“it is was and a game of greatness of important happenings with so much to go from and places to go i it was england vs greece and it was but not as many people thought it would turn out it did the way that it went but Old trafford sixty thosand people together as one though some say it could of been more but it they came out always a strange tunnel in the corner but boom god save the queen faithful and triumfant victorious long and faithful god save the queen they sung even beckham and then it kicked off and once again we watched it in the living room no problems no touch of frost this time to hold things back but it was saturday not wednesday night like last time and a day time kick off as nothing is on tv saturday afternoons maybe war films with soldiers but it was england match of the day me carl and step dad all around the table and monopoly but all eyes on england and eyes on motson who could not be seen but focused and kick off and it was ready"
It makes Benji look like he's got a masters in English Literature

He always seemed to drink with a group of young lads pre game who were quite impressed by his tales of prison etc. He had a mate who had a pub who used to post also. Cambridge way I think

I remember us taking over the Cardiff board. Crewe also. We drew them in the cup if they beat Hereford and several came to visit re the game etc and with insults and what we were in store for etc . They lost to Hereford on pens and they all disappeared so a few popped over to remind them

I first read the forum in 1998. It was after fenetre, but before Rivals. It was an Oatcake site with various bits of Oatcake content like match reports and stuff, as well as the message board which might have been called a guest book on that site.
You didn't have to register to post so you could call yourself whatever you wanted and change your identity whenever you felt like it which led to lots of allegations that certain posters were really someone else etc. It was the same in the very early Rivals days where you could choose your own posting name with every message you sent. But then that got stopped and you were forced to register to be able to post because the forums started to get filled with spam from immature teenagers messing around who could hide their identity and not be traced. Especially with Rivals having a drop down link to all the other opposition teams' forums at the top of the page so you could easily hop to your rival's forum and spam it up with childish abuse.

I did try Wayback Machine on oatcake.co.uk
The boardhost site takes me to a 404 archived page, Rivals.net seems to go as far back (Stoke wise) as a thread called Striker News, but the threads didn't get archived, so I can't view the contents.

There was a chap who was music mad and constantly reviewed albums and concerts. I used to post a weekly Sunday evening new music review (from the days when I was sent stuff to listen/review/play) but I couldn't be arsed with live reviews, don't know who that was.

Also, I had to go to an internet café (!!) to spend a couple of quid for half an hour on here (the old version). It all felt very futuristic. But then I got my own dial up connection and nights of pointless werriting/arguing began in earnest.

Perhaps was you. Maybe not concerts but certainly music mad. I might be getting him mixed up but someone asked what song do you hate the most and I said 'Blue Monday', I absolutely detest it and he was a bit shocked. I quite liked his music stuff although don't listen to much at all and had little idea what he was talking about . Was also a chap who was the matchday PA at St James' Park and a DJ.

I really can’t remember at all how I first came across the oatcake mb, which would probably have been early 00s.. presumably it was “advertised” in the fanzine? I seem to remember originally the forum was just one corner of a full Oatcake site with news/photos/match reviews/player profile sections etc (like an online version of the fanzine)
