Anyone got one? Any recommendations?
Thinking of getting one to commute to work on
Any advice welcome

Thinking of getting one to commute to work on Any advice welcome Depends on budget, whether you need a fold up, what % pedalling you'll be doing etc mate, see cycling weekly reviews below: Cycling Weekly e bikes reviewFor what it's worth my father-in-law has the Specialized bike and it's excellent although as stated very pricey compared to others. I've ridden it a couple of times and it really is a good bike.

I've two e bikes. One has been converted and the other is a basic Raleigh
The converted one I favour the most..I liked the bike anyway but the conversion makes it easy. Only drawback is tendency to wheel spin when starting off sometimes but not a problem to an experienced cyclist
Other drawback was I got caught in a very heavy downpour once. Real cloudburst and it ruined the electrics!!! I persevered and it eventually started working again but it's stuck on one setting
The new Raleigh isn't very powerful. Ok for what I need but it struggles up Ladderidge and I'm not sure it could cope with Penkhull new road. Converted bike goes up both a treat
Friend has an electric bike which was twice the price my Raleigh was and you can tell why it's dearer
Never heard anyone regret having an electric bike. However if I lived somewhere flat I don't think it's necessary
Good luck

Thinking of getting one to commute to work on Any advice welcome If you can manage your cycle commute with an ordinary bike, you should stick with that. I used to have a 5 mile commute that was manageable and was a great morning and afternoon workout. Since I moved house and now live 10 mins walk from my office, I no longer have that commute and do miss it! Riding a bike is really good exercise. Particularly the bits that demand a little exertion… those challenging uphill sections!

I had just been looking into them over here, especially as there are some really good bikes coming out in the lower price range.
SUPER73 gets great reviews. Also, if you lowdown the app the little mongoose is good for nearly 30mph! Those are $1200.
Also saw a new folding that got great reviews in the budget range. $800 local. Folds too. Will see if I can track that down for you too.

Thanks folks some really sound advice 👍
Have a 3 and 8 mile commute so I'll have a think about it.
Was only thinking of spending a grand, which makes me nauseous as I've bought cars for less!

That’s why I have only just seriously started looking. I can get in on the $800 to a grand and a half but when they were price of an old Jeep Wrangler it did make me queasy.

FWIW I know quite a few commuters who use them and few seem to regret the investment. Usually it’s people with more than 10km each way. Mine is a bit less than that (no hills) so happy with a normal bike.
I’m hopeless at bike maintenance so would want to know there was a decent local engineer who could maintain it

This system allows you to pay the bike in interest free instalments from your gross salary ie before tax. Apparently there are other schemes, but CTW is one I’ve used previously.

I have just applied for this through work. Currently commute 8 miles total with a train in between. Considering an e bike but people think it’s lazy of me. But then I am pretty lazy so😉

I have seen/heard people saying that they will need a much more heavy duty bike rack if your car transporting anywhere.

I think the battery is most of the extra weight of an ebike.

It's not a real bike. I ride an ordinary mountain bike for the exercise - anyone who buys one with an electric motor and then thinks that they're a proper cyclist is a twat. I'm sick of being overtaken by fat pensioners in all the multi-coloured lycra and special tiny sunglasses thinking they're Mark Cavendish while a battery does 90% of the work, they couldn't tackle Star Bank or Froghall Bank or anywhere in the Churnet Valley without it. It's not a real bike. It's more of a mobility scooter for people whose disability is laziness and want to disguise it by dressing up as a cyclist. There must be thousands of the bloody things dumped in garages after being used twice (just like exercise bikes). As Patrick says more diplomaticly than me : get a real bike, make some effort and do yourself some good.

Some agreement from me but if I had one it would just be literally for short distance work commuting, I’d keep my mountain bike for weekends and holiday riding and stuff. I can just see the appeal, I don’t ride to work for the exercise, it’s just a cheap way of getting there and back.

Years back (when I last lived in England) there used to be a special type of beer-bellied tosspot who’d have one of those clunky ear pieces stuck to his ear. Usually to be found babbling away to himself (or whichever unfortunate prick was on the other end of the phone) around my local DIY shop.

I was going to buy a fixie ‘til my wife pointed out (a) I’d look like a cunt and (b) I wouldn’t be able to fix a child seat onto it.
