I know yesterday I said I was expecting an uninspiring choice but thinking about it overnight, didn't JC want QSF before we ended up with Lambert? And Jones was a bit left field and a JC pick too wasn't he? Could make an argument that going with a manager that has gained his experience mainly in International Football is a bit left field too in MON. That to me shows he doesn't stick to the dour, safe hand on the till, knows the division types so I agree that our next manager might not be on that list. One I thought about this morning, and it's totally left field, is Xabi Alonso. I don't think he'll be considered but it kind of ties in with what you were saying the Man City connection. He played under Pep at Bayern and was in the running to become his assistant at Man City too. And he's out of a job so no compensation to pay which I imagine will be a big thumbs up for the Coates Family. Andy Cousins wouldn't know him though, whereas he would know the pair I put forward. That was where the base of my theory lies, with the Cousins/City link. Ah ok, gotcha. To be fair though, Alonso was in the running to become Peps assistant at Man City a couple of years ago, and turned up at their training ground to help out with a session so you'd think he'd be aware of him? Not to the level of the two blokes that you mentioned though (it's a theory I absolutely love)

Did Neil manage to wangle himself a new contract at Preston after our very public pursuit and Preston threatening legal action? A bigger transfer budget I think? Yeah, think he got a new deal after WBA interest a few months earlier, then promises of a bigger transfer kitty after our approach

He wouldn't be on my shortlist for that reason alone. Why would you line up everything behind bringing him in when he may well just be leading us up the garden path again? From his perspective, a move to us is probably on a hiding to nothing anyway. Expect him to come out now and announce that he's just signed a new, lucrative contract...

Cue Martin Canning coming out and taking the presser so as not to keep them waiting. "Alex is a little tied up right now...."

Track suit manager demands effort - bye bye Powell, Clucas, Fox etc - if and only if he arrives Powell doesn't show effort? Really?

Although I’ve no particular inclination for either Wilder or Neill it would almost be worth it just to watch the ensuing apoplexy on the Sunderland or Boro message boards where the numbers of people strutting around reassuring themselves of how mighty their clubs are and how insignificant SCFC are is hilarious. When you combine their attitudes with the long established ones at Newcastle you have to assume that football delusion is epidemic in the NE.

Of course FM has got these tweets covered should have checked before posting in the other thread. Interesting that 3 mentioned, Wilder/Neil/Robins, all play 352 or a variation of (3412 etc), so there’s some sense in the links given the current squad setup.

So Neil has until 2pm to get a new improved contract with Sunderland.
Hasn't he done similar before?

Certainly enough to raise intrigue levels. Very mysterious. I’m respectful when it comes to Stoke mate, but if you take Neil then I hope your owners suffer from piles for the rest of their lives. No offence.

He's coming here isn't he, very strange to delay presser 🤔 unless he's after a better deal with them.

It sounds like a daft question because he’s been around for years in the Championship but…what kind of manager is Alex Neil?

He's coming here isn't he, very strange to delay presser 🤔 unless he's after a better deal with them. A five hour delay means it is one of three things: Improved contract at Sunderland (wage/length/both) Needed for the signing of players (very close to Van Hecke on loan from Brighton and Michut on loan from PSG). Going to Stoke. Your guess is as good as mine on which of the 3 it is.

I mean, he's either still talking to players to convince them to sign, negotiating his own contract, or talking to us. Not sure what else his 'meeting' could be?

Neil is hardly a man with an unblemished record is he ? It’s not as if he was promoted out of PNE. I could understand the owners falling over themselves to get things going if they thought Dyche was available but Neil ??
