Spoke to someone this morning who went over the weekend totally uninterested in football but thought it was absolutely brilliant . come on Sir Andrew Lloyd You know it makes sense We did wonder how it would translate to a London audience or to those not interested in football (or the circus or Keele) but it has done so fine. I’ve read about a dozen reviews and they were all good bar one, where the reviewer walked out at the interval. But that was her loss ! As you know the 2nd half is emotionally powerful as well as being joyous. I still needed my hanky every time - despite seeing it many times. Any updates on the cake situation?

There are no good All Bar Ones in London. In fact, there have been no pubs in London since the great fire of 1666.

"We did wonder how it would translate to a London audience or to those not interested in football (or the circus or Keele) but it has done so fine." Translates well because it's a universal theme...triumph over adversity. My only criticism would be the 'generic' Northern accents Even the actor credited in the programme as being from S-o-T didn't have a clue!!!

I remember when Clayhanger was on TV many years ago it was ruined by the failed attempts to get it right. In the play I was given the generic northern accent by Shelley when she was playing that role as understudy whereas I have retained my parents’ southern accent ( which Lakeland Potter never lets me forget 🙄) although in every other respect Shelley played the role really well. Charlie, the usual actor sounded much more like me. Mary, Neil’s mum, hailed from Birkenhead and didn’t have a potteries accent ( but didn’t have a Scouse accent either). His dad, Harry, did.

Went on Friday 25th, with g/f. Shes not a football fan, but thoroughly enjoyed it, as did I. Thought it took a bit to settle in (first couple of scenes were a bit "Legz Akimbo", maybe?), but once it settled down it was magical. We had both enjoyed the film equally well, but were impressed that the play didn't just try to recreate it on stage - it is a "proper" play in its own right.
MC's tip about the front row seats being perfectly good despite being the cheapest was spot on, too - saved us a few quid, which is always good!
Deserves a run round the provinces, since if it can please the West End, there's no doubt it would transfer to any location - as MC says, the themes are universal. And while I get that Stokies' ears are finely attuned to the cast's accents etc, if you're not actually from the Potteries, I'm sure they're close enough for the rest of us.
Well done all round, most especially Messrs. Baldwin and Clarke!
P.S. As I was typing this, something brought the "Can you juggle?" gag back to mind, it still makes me laugh at the thought of it - very silly and very funny!

Fair enough if someone didn't like it, but they don't sound like a proper reviewer if they walked out at the interval! Seeing it at The New Vic was one of my highlights of the year, so I'm delighted it went down well overall. Fingers crossed for that regional run.

Absolutely - imagine a football match reporter walking out at half-time and then submitting a match report on the basis of just the first half. I don't think the Sports Editor would keep them on the books for long ! So glad you liked it.
