Great player, gave everything on the pitch.
492 appearances for Stoke over a 1000 games as a manager and one of the 1972 league Cup winning team, I know because Nige told me every time.

At the risk of repeating myself, Denis Smith is untouchable as far as I'm concerned. Anyone of a certain vintage who had the privilege to watch the great man will know what I mean. He would die for the cause, die for the shirt, has red & white blood flowing through his veins, always gave 100%, gave blood, sweat, tears and quite literally his body and he is most definitely paying for that now in later life. He epitomises what it is to be STOKE! He is STOKE, no if's, no but's & no maybe's and if the current crop of players & especially the manager gave a quarter of what Denis gave us, we would be top of the league and flying high. LEGEND.
And as far as Nige is concerned, you can leave him alone as well.....Legend Nige, Legend!

Was thinking the same tbh Sounds refreshing compared to the cliche ridden shit we usually get through our media which passes for football punditry. Should be remembered that Denis also had successful spells of management at York, Sunderland, Oxford and Wrexham He is a supporter first and foremost but he has a lot of experience to draw on. Denis is great imo and genuine which is getting rarer these days in this field.

Listening to Denis and Nige last night it was just like two old geezers chatting on a park bench. Guess that's why he kept mispronouncing D'Margio and kept calling him DiMaggio aka 'Joltin Joe'?

I can still remember his first appearance at the Vic.
The ref pulled him up for fouling and started giving him a ticking off on the touchline under the Boothen stand. Denis started to run away, but the ref called him back and continued to tell him off.
When the ref had finished with him, he ran off towards the Boothen end, where I was stood, waving his arms in the art, and all the Boothen cheered him. They took him to their hearts from that day.

Commentators and co-commentators always get it in the neck when we don't win. I think that's often because they fall over themselves to make excuses though and it just destroys their credibility.

I didn't listen to the commentary last night but I don't agree that Denis Smith is an apologist for the club he's often been critical of our tactics and our play whenever I have listened to him.

Whenever I've heard him he's fallen over himself to explain things away and act like the task before us was herculean, whoever we were playing. Gleghorn was the best Radio Stoke pundit I can remember, was insightful and even handed and up to speed on the modern game. Unfortunately he was rather too objective for his own good and the club's liking, it seems.

From what I hear from Dennis in commentary is he tries not to upset anyone fans/management and it can come across as sucking up. The 2 that did the Rotherham game through lock down were old boys but were excellent.

Yeah, they hit all the right notes them them two Rotherham lads, didn't they. Former players, were they? John Breckin played 400 times for Rotherham in the 70s Les Payne has commented on Rotherham games for 45 years They are very popular with their fans

He’s rubbish, just repeats the question he was asked, played for Fulham apparently.... well according to Nige he did. Leyton Orient's record transfer fee received, that's one of Nige's favourites. It just needs freshening up a smidge, a bit less 'Last of the Summer Wine' or Test Match Special style bumbling (at least TMS have five days to fill). I don't need to hear about Nigel dropping his pen, Denis having soup or the colour of the sky.

I think there might be a comma in the second sentence first part, maybe it's an invisible comma, because if there's not, it doesn't make any sense.

Nigel, having bigged Denis up, in the amount of games he's played & managed, says to Denis, "penalties then Denis, how would you approach this. Denis, "we will have been practising this & will send the best man first. They send their best man first, who scores, we send our best man first, & he hits the advertising board at the top of the stand. I think that sums them up.
