Coming back from injury and better suited as an 8. Sounds about right 😂 He seems a good player though so let’s see what happens. To be fair,Bayern, it seems like he's been fit for ages, played three 90 minutes for Ireland u21s over the summer, and has played a lot for them in pre-season Hassenhutl seems to think he can play anywhere in midfield www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/20070932.very-good-footballer-smallbone-shows-keep-hasenhuttls-faith/On nailing down his best role, Hasenhuttl added that it is not so simple: “Eight, ten, six, I think these are all positions he can play normally, and where he will get the chance to play in the future. No point telling Bayern this. A bit of positivity flies in the face of his negative agendas…

www.hampshirelive.news/sport/football/football-news/will-smallbone-southampton-championship-loan-7367677Southampton midfielder Will Smallbone is set to sign a new contract at St Mary’s ahead of a season-long loan move to Stoke City, HampshireLive understands. The 22-year-old has been the subject of interest from several Football League sides this summer as well as clubs from abroad, but it seems Michael O’Neill is set to boost his squad with the addition of Smallbone ahead of their Championship opener against Millwall on Saturday, July 30.

Looks like Kilkenny, Laurent, Thompson as options at 6.
All of them as options at 8 (Baker, Kilkenny, Thompson, Laurent, Smallbone, Powell)
Smallbone and Powell as options at 10.

Yes, safe to assume this one's done then? Seems a very good option, and shrewd loan signings like this can be key to having a good season. Another pacey option for the right or left side and I don't think we're far off improving all areas of the pitch. Certainly looking much more rosy than it was a couple of days back.

Type of midfielder is he? Like the loose 8 role - Powell type role?

If this happens, and even not counting Clucas, that's a lot of options in midfield who will expect to play a lot. Interesting to find out what the plan is. Baker Laurent Kilkenny Smallbone Thompson ...and Powell Six players for three places that's what competition is all about if we want to challenge at the right end of the table. With injuries and five subs allowed they should all get minutes but someone isn't going to be happy for sure. Clucas must be off?

www.hampshirelive.news/sport/football/football-news/southampton-will-smallbone-sunderland-burnley-7349354Capable of playing across the midfield in several positions, Hasenhuttl has previously said he thinks Smallbone can feature as a six, eight or ten in his team. Against Klagenfurt on Monday evening, he operated as a roaming No.8, with Diallo and Romeu alongside him. Having those two players alongside him meant Smallbone was able to drift around the pitch and pick up the ball in space, sometimes dropping deep to collect it from the centre-backs and at other times joining the attack and linking up well with Che Adams, as seen when he struck the woodwork early on. It’s a position he likes playing in the team, preferring it to other roles in midfield where he can’t roam as much and have the license to move around the pitch with as much freedom. “The manager just wants me to go out there and express myself,” added Smallbone. “It’s a position that suits me a bit better than either a six or a ten. Playing as an eight gives me a bit of a free role and he's just been telling me to go out there and try and create things.

When positions get defined by numbers it makes me want to crawl up my own arsehole Well you can if you want but it won't stop people doing it. Can't see what difference it makes 10, AM, in the hole, behind the striker. The first two are definitely more efficient to type.

With Vrancic and Sawyers gone and Powell out until at least September and probably with his recovery record longer and a good chance of further injury before Xmas this looks like a good signing. Him and Baker putting in good through balls for Gayle, Campbell and Brown should see our creativity better than last season. He has also played wide right I believe for Southampton so offers options there as well.

Sounds like he's more of a creative type in terms of his skillset. More of an 8 than a 10, assume he'd be the one to get forward in a 3-5-2 just ahead of Baker and one of Laurent/Kilkenny? We don’t play a 10 though, we play two 8s either side of the central player so they can shuffle across to support the wide men defending

Kilkenny will be the 6 you'd think, with Baker occasionally sharing that role and the two 8's will be Baker/Laurent/Smallbone/Clucas with Thompson filling in both roles. Loads of options.

Scored 3 goals for Ireland u21s over the summer www.the42.ie/jim-crawford-on-will-smallbone-2-5784452-Jun2022/“He’s another player, he has fantastic ability, he’s an athlete. What we do need to see from Will next season is if he can get a run of games at Southampton or a Championship club, his name has been bandied about. But the more we see of Will, the better he gets because he’s a real talent. Once he gets settled in his club and plays consistently, there is every chance he’ll get called up [to the senior team] because of what he brings.

That's not going to get the best from him at all. If the plan is to go with two 8s then it sounds like he'll bring some creativity, though it doesn't sound like a system that will necessarily be bursting with it.
