It would be the 11th defender, if I'd done the math correctly.
So now we can skip the goalkeeper as well!
That is perhaps the genius plan?

He wasn't injured last season he was just out of favour, he's been out with a knee injury for 3 fairly lengthy periods of time over his career (not sure if it's the same knee?) and had to have surgery on at least one occasion so I guess the question is whether that can hold up and whether he's lost any sharpness?

Fuck me he’s packing out centre halves. Meanwhile the wingback situation is in utter turmoil. Just gonna thrash Tymon again this season and as for the right….. Hope to god he’s got at least 3 coming in including a striker

How is he still in a job?

I remember his debut I think it was for Swansea away at Liverpool in the FA cup, I think this was the first time he had met his teammates, he played a absolute blinder and more or less kept his side in the tie, I thought this kid will soon become too big for Swansea. I was shocked when he went to Fulham but they had just been promoted and were signing anything that had a pulse, I think it was bad advice and his career seems to dropped off a cliff since then. Someone earlier was saying he had knee problems well so did Ian Cranson, if we can keep him fit and motivated then we could have a hell of a player.

28 years old and was previously rated as a £20million defender.
We are signing him for free. If he stays fit he could be the new Taggart. If he doesn't stay fit then I'd say it was definitely worth the gamble. Proper stoke signing this would be.
Jagielka Souttar Mawson
Looks solid to me. Come on Stoke!!!

If we REALLY need yet another central defender, which I rather doubt, we could do a lot worse than Mawson, who at the point he left the Swans was undoubtedly a midrange to upper range PL player.

Taggart was a well past his prime, often chunky, experienced defender who offered a lot to a team that needed leadership. We have Flint and Jagielka. Flint shouldn’t need a leader and Jagielka had been a far better player than Mawson ever will be. I don’t get the comparison.

I'm very concerned if we pull this signing off there won't be anymore aging or injury prone central defender left on the free agent market. And there's still 40 days of transfer window left! Are we going to have to get some non-league gems to fill the void in Central defence?

That injury record and lack of game time, similar to Gayle, fills me with fear over what we might be getting. Our injury record is poor with fully fit players, let alone crocks. What a desperate mess we are in. It's a good insurance policy for MON though- fill the squad with crocks and then when the inevitable injuries and poor form kick in, it's an oven ready excuse. This looks like another Alfie Doughty, although at least he's free I suppose

Always had him down as a good footballer, but not necessarily a brilliant defender. Mawson and Gayle would also surely be costing us a packet in wages. Does that not count towards FFP? If it’s a good chunk of what we can spend, and we’re going to blow it on two players we don’t really need, that’s a big concern.
If it doesn’t stop us signing players we need, then I can live with it, but sign us a player we ACTUALLY require before Millwall please!

There is much to like with this transfer, but I really hope we just give him a one-year-contract with option of another if he plays more than 30 games. This is a huge gamble because of all the injuries he has had, but hopefully he is past that now.

There's undoubted pedigree here, and without an injury record like his, we get nowhere near signing him.
John Eustace had a similar record before joining us and he was fine. Got to just hope he's over it now, but give him a contract that reflects the level of risk.

How is he still in a job? Is there any way we can apply to the FL to be relegated before the season starts and not have the play any games? There should be an option to give up before you start. KIt would give the doom-mongers something to moan about and they're not happy unless they are moaning.

Hardly a gamble, we have plenty of cover if he never plays and he could be a great addition if his knee is now healed. Medical should solve it.

Good player if he stays fit. Always thought we should have signed him from Barnsley at the time.
He is one hell of a gamble but how many CBS do we need?

Good! There is no way back from 3 years of knee injuries. It only gets worse, not better. Think Alfie needs to be looking at League One unfortunately.

What I like about this is Smithy at the Sentinel must have gained a good rapport with the club for him to be told the situation on this rumour?
I think that is good for the club to quash what maybe silly rumours or perhaps agent led stuff. Well done I say!
