I never went to bed.
Exciting!
Duplantis just jumped fine. Sagnia one jump left, 2 cm from bronze.

Khaddi Sagnia was only 2 cm from the bronze in the women's long jumps.
Armand Duplantis just became world champion in the vault pole. Now he's trying 6.21. And he did it!
A new world record. Again.

Why are there almost zero fans in the stadium? Makes me think the Uk is the last place athletics is alive and well. The evening sessions have sold out every day. Whether everyone actually turns up though… The morning sessions are always pretty sparsely attended though. No medals to be decided and events which don’t scream ‘Marquee.’ Agree that the UK does get very good attendances for top-level meets. From a selfish point of view I’m glad that the Diamond League has moved from London to Birmingham as the venue. Yeah, maybe I switched on at the wrong times but I'm not feeling it. I know it was the Olympics in London but I went to a couple of not much going on other than heats 11am sessions and the stadium was shaking!

A great 800m race between Hodgkinson and Mu. Stunning times in the 100m hurdles after the comedy of the heats. A great pole vault world record from Duplantis - he couldn't have scripted the last action of the championships better. I couldn't believe it when I saw he's only 22. Surely he'll go on to beat Bubka as the all-time great? Golds always look better of course, but overall a decent championships from the GB team. Why are there almost zero fans in the stadium? Makes me think the Uk is the last place athletics is alive and well. I don't know about surrounding areas, but the population of Eugene is only around 170,000. Athletics isn't all that popular in the US. One of the GB athletics wrote about the popularity or otherwise: www.bbc.co.uk/sport/athletics/62063153I think World Athletics (or whoever is responsible) relied on Usain Bolt too much and failed to capitalise on his fame. There are plenty of great characters and rivalries in the sport, with the men's and women's 200m arguably as strong as they've ever been. In this championship, I enjoyed watching the heats more than I usually do.

All I know is the World Champs used to be a big deal for me and I didn't know this one was on until it started. Having said that despite a fading commonwealth and lower standard of athletics I fancy the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham will be front page stuff. Majorly because it's in the UK but the fans will get behind it like we never saw in these champs and also it has such a diversity of sports. Squash is my thing and this is the only games where it gets a look in !

I did a morning session in 2012 and it was heptathlon, steeplechase qualifying and other assorted qualifying events with minimal British representation(aside from JEH) and it was rammed and very, very loud. Cram said this morning that tickets were a sell out (bought by ticket agencies) but couldn’t sell them on as people wouldn’t pay the asking price. A shame in what is the ‘spiritual home’ of US athletics.

I knew the Commonwealth Games was happening ages ago, however.

The Diamond League events are really poorly attended in some of the host countries and makes for an awful TV visual. The Continental Gold meets are often better for me. Smaller venues, larger crowds and competitive racing where you see athletes more relaxed but getting into form in some cases and others pushing it to get exposure. I follow athletics more than football (aside from us) and it does itself no favours in terms of promotion.

Duplantis is a star said 6.10+ earlier but a new record 6.21. Just how far can he go in setting the record 6.30 - 6.35? i hope so. I was hoping Kelly Hodkinson could have got a gold but Mu just held her off. Going to a few Commonwealth games events including the Athletics the tickets are sadly for where i have sat several times before was hoping for the new home straight stand.

I have absolutely loved watching these World Championships.
The quality of some of the performances has been incredible, GB have done much better than expected, and though it's difficult to watch it live, the BBC coverage on catch up is excellent. Duplantis is a genius The Mu/Hodgkinson race was a thriller Jake Whitman's 1500m run was epic and brought back memories of Coe, Ovett, Cram Many, many brilliant performances.
I watched a lot of it the next day without knowing the results and I found it really thrilling.

Ok so in a nutshell I had a massive rant about a lack of coverage at the beginning. Mainly because it wasn’t really advertised in a way that the masses would know about. But reading some of the posts on here I’m happy to be proved wrong and did watch a re run on Saturday afternoon which I thoroughly enjoyed. I still wish Athletics was promoted as much as it was in the 90’s. The dedication these athletes put into their efforts with little financial rewards should be shown as much as possible to expose it to the youth of today. I personally ran for Stoke at 4 x 100 relay for a few years when younger and it was a real occasion back then, I doubt it happens now but I don’t know?

I'd say he's already jumped 6.50-6.65 if the bar had been higher at some tournaments In a way I don't like the fact he puts the bar 1 cm (or whatever it is) higher each time he sets a new world record. I understand, he gets 1 million SEK each time there is a new world record, but ... he, like everyone else on this planet, has no idea what happens tomorrow. If he gets a severe injury he might regret he didn't try 6.50 or 6.65. Maybe he yesterday made his best jump ever, and will never get that jump in the history books.

Bubka occasionally broke the world record by 2-3cm a time, but he generally did it in 1cm increments too.

Duplantis could go to ridiculous heights. The W 800m was such a great race too and the fact that Mu had to work so hard shows just how good Hodgkinson is. That has the makings of a real rivalry which could endure for quite a while. Women’s 100 hurdles was surreal in the heats and final and Mihambo showed why she is such a competitor with that third jump after two failures. I wanted to go to the Commonwealth’s but just not possible which has naffed me off a bit. Hope you enjoy it mate 👍
