Bit of a quiet one for the Coates’s - thought it would have been up to double figures this year ! What a good job the EFL is doing by stopping them spending it and putting some much needed cash into their Leagues !!!! 😠

This 'annual' list reminds me just how fast your life slips away, seems to come up about every 6 weeks!
Must be the latent socialist in me but I always find it mildly obscene :-)

Does that now make the Coates family the richest British owners of a football club?

Where’s the lad that was looking to buy Chelsea (Radcliffe I think) thought he’d mega bucks? He was 25th last year with £6.3 billion - but had been 5th in 2020, with £12bn. Don't know where he is this year, position-wise, but his wealth is listed at £6.075m, so he'll be lower

Looking a the 365 numbers you’d have to say that’s also a huge underestimate of their real wealth , it’s truly staggering achievement ot build a business of that scale in that timeframe I’m not that’s still actually recognised

Spot on, mate (as usual). They have the wealth to spend on SCFC but aren’t allowed to by restrictive rules that forbid their wealth spreading from SCFC to other clubs in transfer fees. It is lunacy.

Couldn’t spend it in a 100 lifetimes , can’t see the point of all that wealth when there’s so many ppl struggling Unrestrained capitalism. The more they squeeze the people at the bottom the more abhorrent it becomes. That criticism can't be aimed at the Coates family when you look at how much tax they pay which is at least. 40% more than the 16 people above them in the rich list. The problem isn't the rich people who pay their dues but the rich people who invest their money abroad to escape paying tax. Look at the charitable donations the Coates make as well and yes they are obscenely rich but without them the country would be a lot poorer.

I think Denise is the highest individual tax payer in the country, isn't she? In which case, those people ahead of her on the list need a good seeing to (yes, l'm sure they've all got their excuses, seems straight forward to me they're milking the system and doing the taxpayer out of a lot of public benefit).

If you look at bet365 as a company it’s virtually wholly owned by the family and most of their income is from dividends paid on their shareholding. If you look At companies like paddy power or ladbrookes the dividends are split between millions of shareholders. This leads to the massive pay packets that the coats family have and as has been said they pay their taxes at the rates in this country and not ‘ten bob per million’ in tax havens. They also spend a lot of it in the city too Good luck to them

It's such a pointless list in the context of the football club. They can't spend much of it on us and if they could, the lack of foresight and frankly football fabric at the top end of the club would see it spent far less efficiently than it should. They've just wrote off over well over 100M spent on taking us from 9th in the PL to four consecutive bottom half Championship finishes.
All in all it's probably a good thing, because it gives Denise the chance to spend it on more needing philanthropic causes rather than her brother 'banjoing' it up the wall.

Elon Musk isn’t emptying his savings account to buy Twitter, and his fortune swings wildly depending on stock volatility.

There's the potential for a long and complex debate around the relative acceptability of making such ridiculous amounts of money out of an industry that often both generates and relies on people's desperation. The Coates's seem about as responsible as one can be for mega rich bookmakers, though.
A World where there's more and more of us and yet those with, basically, all the money are becoming less and less is inherently sick though.. and that's not even taking into account the environmental collapse we are facing.
Keep focusing on football.. it's easier 👀

Alex Gerko £117.4m You are confusing net worth (which is what the rich list is based on) with income (which tax is based on). Also worth noting that the rich list applies an estimate to company values (plus most other things) and will have no access to bank accounts. Finally, the tax system only taxes actual crystallised gains- basically cash income. If I own a ferrari and the value goes up this year, I aren't taxed on that gain. The Coates pay a helluva lot of tax because they take the profits out of bet365 in cash as salary or dividend. That's their choice, alot of other owners may choose to leave cash in the company- thus increasing their net assets, but with no tax to pay. I'm not saying there aren't ways of reducing your tax bill (being domiciled overseas), but broadly if I, you or anyone else had the same income (note - income not increase in asset values) as the Coates we'd pay the same tax.
