Probably on the wrong board but, heh, Lou is doing fantastic stuff in S-o-T www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-stoke-staffordshire-60059188Lou Macari recognised by Big Issue for homelessness work Published30 minutes ago Share Lou Macari IMAGE SOURCE,TOM REECE Image caption, Lou Macari has spent several years helping homeless people in the city Former footballer and Stoke City manager Lou Macari has been recognised by The Big Issue for his work to help homeless people. The magazine has named him a Changemaker in 2022 after the ex-Manchester United and Celtic player set up a centre to help people in poverty. The Macari Centre aims to provide emergency shelter and short-term accommodation for about 50 people. He said it was nice to be recognised for trying do something. Mr Macari, who managed Stoke City in two spells in the 1990s, told the magazine he had had a good life playing for the two clubs and homelessness was a change he could make with help from others. In 2018 over 650 people approached the city council for homelessness assistance and by mid-2019 more than 1,700 people were due to be helped by the authority, council figures show. The former footballer who set up a homeless shelter "We've got a problem, we've always had a problem but what is helping a little bit is that everyone is starting to recognise that homelessness is a problem for everyone... not just the people of Stoke-on-Trent," he told BBC News. Pods in the centre IMAGE SOURCE,TOM REECE Image caption, When the pandemic hit, the centre set up individual pods for people staying there He started the centre five years ago, he said, because he knew he could do something by providing people with food and a roof over their head. "I went to the council, asked them for a key to any building they had in Stoke-on-Trent, got a key next to the mosque in Regent Road and that was the start of education about homeless people," he said. "Five years later it's still continuing and I'm still learning and unfortunately the numbers have gone up." He said the pandemic had led to a rise in the number homeless people and he did not think it would decline any time soon. "We hope to try to improve people's lives and I take the view that, get them off the street, get them into a warm place, and feed them, that's our contribution to doing it."

How do you follow being one of our most important and talented managers ever?
Just like that.

Great man & what he does for the homeless in the city should earn him a knighthood. Gave me some of my best times supporting scfc.

Did great things for Stoke City, but not so great things for the City. The sooner his flophouse is shut down the better. It causes no end of problems and is one of the main reasons why Hanley is infested with violent beggars and dustheads. Or, rather than shutting it down, relocate it to the leafy suburbs of Trentham where he lives, lets see how the people living there like it.

Lou was and still is the only manager I've been literally devastated when he left us for Celtic in 40+ years of watching Stoke.

I'm not one for being controversial or 'rising to the bait' ...... and I really don't want to give this troller the attention he or she seeks. But thats just an appalling and offensive display of complete ignorance.

Our family does a lot for the homeless charities in Stoke on Trent and believe you me if you heard the life stories of these ppl it’s truly heartbreaking, I know we all make choices and there are consequences to our actions , mental health etc , but if you were living in their environment then drugs and alcohol go hand in hand just to get you through the day , and the homeless were in Hanley long before lou’s centre was .Just remember ppl there’s lots of ppl on drugs and alcohol living in houses , that’s the difference they have a roof over their heads

watched marvellous again last night after listening to his undr the cosh episode on a long drive last week, a wonderful man is Lou, for those who havent listened to his interview/story on the podcast the story about Nello ringing for fish, chips and mushy peas and some pop from the chippy is one of the funniest stories i have ever heard!
he certainly is trying his best to help with the homeless problem but its like the proverbial plaster on the crack i guess, yes short term it does cause issues with vagrancy and "undesirables" but i think if we looked at it long term i wonder how many do turn it round after 12 months with him?

Lou is just a lovely, generous, and caring human being. The way he took Nello under his wing tells you what a decent person he is, and the centre he runs now is a continuum of his nature to help others less fortunate than himself. I'm not much for patronage but people like Lou deserve all the gongs going. But this caring and benevolent side of him has not gone unrecognised by everyone. I can't think of any of our managers except Waddo who was so universally liked by us supporters.

Best times ever under Lou. Better than the premier league years. Maybe just my age though at the times. He is an absolute ambassador of Stoke on Trent, right up there with some of our greats. To answer one previous quote, Lou could just retire to the leafy streets of Trentham and not give a shit but he does. I can get the poster in a limited way. There have been similar issues in Stafford with homeless charities which then attracted homeless from Wolverhampton. However, there is no easy answer here. I volunteered for mid staffs MIND for a number of years and many of these people just need help. I know this does split opinion but I always feel better buying a sandwich or a coffee for somebody who is less fortunate than me.
Just my opinion don’t shoot me.

It's interesting to see the reaction of people who have no understanding of who Nello was, his relationship with Stoke/Macari and his ability to befriend people. He could not get his head around the fact that it was fact based, must have asked on 3 or 4 occasions "Did this part really happen?" Lou will always be my favourite manager and his work for the City's homeless should be lauded.
