Good luck to him at his new club. Hopefully we have the strength in depth we need until the end of the season, but no real surprise as no doubt his wages were a big part of the decision. Kind of overlooking he’s going a League One club? That will also be playing a big part too. He’s not good enough for this division and for what we need. Good luck to him though. He seems a nice chap and will do well at a lower level. But not to scratch in this. No I agree. I wasn't meaning we needed his quality, I was saying I hope we don't have a run of injuries with insufficient cover. Ultimately the fee we paid for his skillset was indicative of our poor transfer policies in recent years and that's not his fault, clearly, but we, as a club have definitely been overly burdened by those poor historical decisions.

Would rather we kept him and shipped out the useless Chester. Yes, but that wasn’t an option. As far as I know Sunderland we’re not interested in Chester.

Sorry maybe I’m misunderstanding your last sentence, are you suggesting Shawcross’ legendary status is in question? I do sort of agree with the Shawcross/Bath analogy though except Shawcross was a much higher level version of the old school British CB. Peak Shawcross was a higher level player than the highest levels we attained in the premiership. That’s why he’s a legend, because his quality was instrumental in that great period for the club. Shawcross was obviously a better all round player than Batth but they both had similar strengths and weaknesses in my opinion. Ye I'm fully on board with Shawcross and Bath being very similar (old school british CB) and clearly Shawcross was a much stronger version of Bath. It's just your post read as if you were questioning Shawcross' status as a legend. "so called legend" Maybe you didn't mean it like that but that's how it read, in which case, even though I'm all for different views and whatnot, I think it's a fairly outrageous opinion to hold that Shawcross isn't a club legend.

He’s a solid defender in a back four but is not a good enough footballer to play any position in a back three. Before the last international break I said the thing I dreaded most was losing Souttar or Brown. An injury to one of the two new center backs puts us in a real pickle.

He’s not good enough for this division and for what we need. I only agree with half that statement. No, he wasn't good enough for the way we want to play, but he could clearly do a very effective job in a team who just want to put blood, sweat and tears into keeping the ball out of their area. He'd be good for teams in the lower end of the Championship trying to stay up. If he'd have swapped placed with Jags at Derby, that would have been as good for Derby as for us.

Decent centre half. He'll be a big fish in a small pond up there. Clearly gave his best for Stoke.

Might not have been the 'complete footballer' but he was a decent defender, never gave anything less than 100% and seemed like an all round good lad. One of the few in recent years who can leave with his head held high. I wish him well.

Love his goodbye message thanking those that supported him. That's me and bayernoatcake excluded from his farewell message 😂 but bayernoatcake doens't rate anyone anyway. He was decent enough, solid pro as many said, and I think he'll do excellent in league one where you need to be more of a defender than a ball player. He'll score a few for them as well. I think my initial concern with him was that even TP let him go back so he could sign for us at the time

Batth was never good enough to be a regular for us and for the money and wages he was that makes him a bad signing.

Just had a look on the Sunderland message board to look at their reaction and it got me thinking about other clubs fans posting on other boards…..whatever happened to Captainfishpaste was it? He was Sunderland wasn’t he and didn’t he post regularly on the Oatcake? I might be wrong, but did he leave under a cloud after a fall out?
