Ridiculous. I can see his point but he should stand by the song given the context the word is used in. This creeping sanitisation is ruining not just music but art of all kinds. Before you know it virtually the entire back catalogue of blues, rock n roll, hip hop etc will be cancelled due to misogyny, sexism, stereotyping or whatever. The same can be said of classic literature or art. There'll come a time when all we're left with is safe, sterile, insipid guff with nothing to provoke thought or debate or convey real human emotion for fear of offending some over sensitive soul somewhere.

Re the BBC list of musicians not playing songs anymore pretty sure without being tactless No.5 Prince doesn't play songs without swearing nowadays either.....
Anyway I presume Elvis has a book, album or tour coming out shortly...

To be fair, he hasn't asked them not to play it, he just said that he'd rather they didn't play it than bleep out the N-word.

I gather The Stones have retired Brown Sugar from their live sets.

Classic literature is different because it's someone else making a judgement on the work of an author who can't speak for themselves because usually they're dead. Costello is very much alive - so if he doesn't want to perform a song again or wishes for it not to be played then its his song to do what he wants with.

He did say he'd felt compelled to rewrite that verse for live performances because of people getting upset about the lyric, so it is another self-censorship story.

Have Stiff Little Fingers made any comments about their song White Noise.
That said, I don’t ever think I’ve heard that tune on the radio.
Which is a shame as it is rather good.

Useful link that...for the last 42 years I’ve heard the lyrics as ‘one more WHITTLE one less white n*****’
No wonder I hadn’t got a clue what it meant 😀

Usually criticising those who didn't get the idea behind it. Didn't some Yank completely grasp the wrong end of the stick and make a huge fuss? Not really Radio 2 stuff 🙂

I’ve hated Costello since he appeared every week on Fantasy Football League with Baddiel and Skinner in the 90’s. Just never took to the bloke and his music is, at best, boring!

I always remember Billy Idol on Radio 1s Roundtable show. I think he lasted 3 songs before was asked to leave 😊

i’m not a fan and find his music bland but bloody hell that songs tame compared to some of the drill/rap around today where they talk about stabbing, shooting and raping.

My main memory of that song is that it was the start of that band believing their own hype. Their first album was just awesome. Nothing that followed came anywhere near including this song.
