Think that was Metro Radio in Newcastle wasn't it ? I always remember Billy Idol on Radio 1s Roundtable show. I think he lasted 3 songs before was asked to leave 😊 It just might be. You’ve a great memory if that’s right. My main memory of that song is that it was the start of that band believing their own hype. Their first album was just awesome. Nothing that followed came anywhere near including this song. Have to disagree on that Not a big music fan but felt got better and better. Their last album was fantastic even at this stage of their careers. I sponsored opening game of the season years ago v Sheff Weds and the team ran out to 'Go for it', was part of the sponsor deal that day 👍 The PA announcer at St James' Park used to post on here, was a DJ and Stoke fan. He used the same tune in their pre match warm up, obviously not replacing 'Local Hero' but prior to the team coming out. after he found out the band were Toon fans.

Have Stiff Little Fingers made any comments about their song White Noise. That said, I don’t ever think I’ve heard that tune on the radio. Which is a shame as it is rather good. The rhyming couplet that is: Ahmed is a P***, curry-coffee qu**r Ten to a bed, flocking over here Tax-sponging canker, smelly thieving kids Ponce greasy wanker, worse than the y**sis Shakespearian and the first verse I imagine has been stolen as a Boris Johnson speech. Brilliant album.

Haven't heard this on the radio for a while either Didn’t Chubby Brown sing that as well? I remember hearing it at school about the same time as Jilted John which reminded me. It was that Doc Cox bloke reached #22 in 1978. I remember Johnny Rotten advised a listen in the NME.

I’ve hated Costello since he appeared every week on Fantasy Football League with Baddiel and Skinner in the 90’s. Just never took to the bloke and his music is, at best, boring! Grudges are wonderful things eh Badge I remember him being featured in the NME/Melody Makers? Blackmail Corner section. At the time when he was riding on the coat tails of Punk/ New Wave there he was in full photo resplendent as a Fribo Talk about this year's model

Brilliant album. For the sake of completeness, it’s worth quoting the first and third verses both for their brilliance but also to emphasise the message… Rastus is a nigger, thug, mugger, junkie Black gollywog, big horny monkey Pimp, pusher, coon, grinning pick-a-ninny Send him home soon, back to the trees … Paddy is a moron, spud-thick Mick Breeds like a rabbit, thinks with his prick Anything floors him if he can' fight or drink it Round them up in Ulster, tow it out and sink itYou can see why the hard of thinking might be attracted to the song. But as a blistering attack on racial prejudice, I struggle to think of a song that betters it.

Inflammable Material blew me away when it came out. Ok, some pedestrian tunes but there are half a dozen that are just astonishing particularly the reworked Suspect Device and Wasted Life as well as Barbed Wire Love, Alternative Ulster and Johnny was in addition to White Noise. I was 15 when it was released and that album hit me like a train. A bit like a first love moment, it can never be repeated. Maybe that’s why what followed never resonated with me to the same extent. Elvis Costello never quite had the same resonance, although I do like quite a lot of his music.

Therein lies the problem with some of the most incisive satire aimed at bigots – The idiots think we’re laughing with them, not at them. Sadly, people for whom Alf Garnett and Eddie Booth were heroes are not an insignificant minority.

I bought that Album from Legendary Lonnie and I remember him saying they won't be talking about SLF in 40 years. You were wrong Lonnie, seminal album.

A quiet thinking fella given all the mayhem going on around him. A musicians musician though I felt not suited to being front and centre. We chatted about his time producing the Specials first album before I was left lying on the floor at 6am drunk after trying to keep up with Shane. He had eclectic music taste for sure, mix in the country and a bit of Burt Bacharach certainly not a career Punk but an interesting fella to have met. From what I can remember 😎

I used to buy nearly all my records from Legendary Lonnie. He was a great source for some very old and obscure blues records, and some rock n roll stuff too. (Hanley record library used to be great for really old blues records too. They were never out on display, but once they knew you they used to let you have access to some very old and rare vinyl) Come to think of it, I think I’ve even got a Legendary Lonnie single in one of my record boxes in the loft. And, FWIW, I quite like a bit of Elvis Costello music from time to time

Has a very Roy Wood look about him. A friend of mine used to buy a Pink Floyd album every month or so. Lonnie would ask him which one he didn't have and Lonnie would always claim was their best and sell it to him . They had lost of best albums

And, FWIW, I quite like a bit of Elvis Costello music from time to time I'm pretty sure he tried to swap my SLF album for a bit of Sonny Boy Williamson for the reason above. So I bought it because he was a good bloke his beard at the time was longer than Gandalf. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of everything from 1950 onwards. Imagine my surprise about 5 years later when the great John Peel started playing SBW on his late radio show. I remember thinking "how cool am I ? I've been listening to him since 1978"
