It wasn’t so much that as he broke our system and as a team we stopped scoring. Wasn’t his fault but we needed mobility up front and he left us static and made it easier to stop the wingers, who were our entire supply line. There’s a reason we barely came close to looking like the team we did en route to the cup final again after he arrived. You only have to see his goal scoring stats to understand that he was never going to bang in 15 a season, so pillorying him for not doing so at stoke is just a bit odd. To be fair I’m not sure anyone’s done that have they? It was the wider effect of his signing on the team and set up that was the big problem. He actually looked a better fit for Hughes’ system where you could get a Bojan or and Ireland playing off him and then wide forwards getting into good positions from his hold up play.

Not in so many words no, but I get the impression he’s being judged on goals when he did so so much more which seemingly gets forgotten. There’s a reason why he played hundreds of top flight games.

He was replaced by Crouch really though. Crouch was a player to play off rather than a prolific goalscorer. He was but we spent big money on both and needed more from both really. Crouch wasn’t the player we needed at all and I still think overall he was poor for us.

I didn’t mind Crouch or Kenwyne. Crouch’s scoring record was better though and both could be useful, defensively, from set pieces. Absolutely. He offered more but Bayern only looks at goal output when it comes to Crouch. No I don’t. I think he had a detrimental effect to the way the team played. He also didn’t score the amount of goals you’d expect him to.

Yet another positive thread. The original idea of the thread was to reminisce and create discussion having no game. I think it’s worked. Why read and post if you’re not interested? I'm on a crusade to rid Stoke City of negativity. It's a tough job.

He did tho if you look at his stats He never scored more than 8 league goals for us in a season? I think that’s average at best. I love Crouchy, always have done but he wasn’t what we needed, he never formed part of our best XI and it was an opportunity missed. Not all his fault as I don’t think the managers from TP to Rowett used him especially well.

Does anyone remember being excited about Gary Bannister signing? Forest fans perhaps after they sold him to us I remember being on the old Boothen End when Bannister was playing. He was so bad it prompted “Bannister, you were a free transfer and we got ripped off at that much” Probably the only time Bannister brought a smile to Stoke fans faces!!

I think we needed someone mobile playing off him but never did really, I think Bojan was the closest to that but the formation didn’t suit it, with us only playing 1 striker.

We have signed some awful forwards but the one that totally blows my mind is berahino
12 million quid for a player with no current form ,due to being banned from playing, for failing an fa drugs test
There is just no sense to it ...how can you possibly know a player is worth 12 million quid and a mega money long term contract , from the fact, they are banned from playing .

You’re right, tbh I thought he had scored more than that. My biggest issue with him still though was the overall play issue. He just wasn’t we needed and I think that showed. Walters was mobile wasn’t he? Diouf was mobile. What we needed was a version of KJ that had fire in his belly. It was a bad transfer.

Odemwingie was quality and it’s a shame we didn’t have a version that was 3-4 years younger.

Jones when he could be arsed was mobile and pulled defenders all over the place. He was excellent in that run to the cup final and what we really needed was a more consistent version of him or someone to compete with him, rather than him being replaced with someone who didn’t fit how he wanted to play.

Yep, I think the lack of consistency is what made me question his mobility. Unfortunately, when he wasn’t ‘on it’, he wasn’t mobile.

I seem to remember about eight minutes into his debut against Wolves KJ muscled past a defender with ease and thumped it from range against the bar. I thought we’d signed an absolute beast. Shame we didn’t see it too often because he was formidable when in that kind of mood. Didn’t John Terry make a comment about him being one of the hardest forwards to play against or something?

Mobile is meaningless when he didn't know when to run or where to Jones understanding of football was almost as bad Afobe If we had Crouch 2010-11 season, or anyone with a brain, we would have done better

If we’d had Crouch in 2010-11 we’d have had the same issues as when he had Carew in the side, the wingers needed a mobile centre forward to open up space for them. Sucking the pace out of the team was a big factor in where it went wrong for Pulis.

Surridge is dangerously close to joining the list. Has to find some form soon. Vokes is a big omission. If you look at his record, Surridge never has been and is very unlikely to be a prolific striker at the Championship level. He’s a league 1 player at best.

Chris Uwelumo never tore up any trees for us. Some decent moments: Millwall at home - 3-2 last minute header Vale away as previously mentioned Wigan volley - fa cup We’ve had worse, a lot worse and did hit double figures in the year we got promoted.

Crouch averaged one goal every four games at every club he played for: 145 goals in 600 appearances - most at the highest level. So it’s hard to question his contributions. I don’t have any evidence to back it up but it’s possible he scored at critical moments in a game. His hold up play and head ons were were excellent. Interestingly his goal production for England was twice what it was at the club level, which is probably due to the fact he had better service at the international level.
