Simon Stainrod was hugely disappointing for us. He came, not long capped by England, with a big reputation. However he also turned up so overweight he made Kevin Wimmer look like Twiggy. In a Game against Sheffield United in early 1988 he was audaciously controlling goal kicks on his chest, and had one cheek puffing mazy dribble beating three defenders that was as much as a shock to him as it was the crowd. Incidentally in the same game, Peter Beagrie (playing for Sheffield), turned Steve Parkin’s Y-fronts back to front in a great display of wing play. Stainrod’s first goal against Swindon was greeted with a chant of ‘What’s it like to score a goal?’, and I remember wonder goals against Walsall and Birmingham. Seven goals in total, and I saw everyone. Rumour had it he left the club because he’d decked Mick Mills during training. As a school kid I used to see him in Newcastle High Street, and he was always cheerful, approachable and friendly. The bloke is a legend everywhere he played apart from us. The bloke had incredible skill but liked a drink or 20. I read he was escorted out of the player of the year awards for calling Justin Fashanu a few names, may have been John Fashanu claimed that but he was no better back then.Stainrod almost signed for Barca

KJ Now there's a player that would split the fans 50/50. I’m not a KJ fan but wouldn’t have him on this list. When he could be arsed he was effective. I just think he was such a wasted talent tbh.

I didn’t think Joselu was that bad either. Not prolific, but I thought he was ok. Scored a few decent goals for us. He was a massive pussy.

He arrived with the weird statistic of having won more headers than anyone else that season in the Bundesliga. What seemed to me to be quickly obvious was that he was a very decent header, but then I realised that he almost always went for headers when there were no defenders near so he was unchallenged

For fun Central attackers over the years (in no particular order); Suddick Lighbourne Randall Scott Berchin Carruthers Daddason Greenacre Carew Gujohnsen Gudietti Berahino Joselu Afobe I must have missed some!!! As I understood it we signed the likes of Gujohnsen and Owen etc to raise the profile of the club put us on the global football map.

What seemed to me to be quickly obvious was that he was a very decent header, but then I realised that he almost always went for headers when there were no defenders near so he was unchallenged Wasn’t just heading he just refused to occupy CB’s full stop. Might have been great if football was a non contact sport.
