Feel like this thread is a bit harsh. I'm all for booing and criticising when we are shit, 100%. That's part of being a fan, you voice your discontentment when things aren't going well. I can't deal with happy clappers. And I can't deal with the BBC.
But I think Ange is good (she's got O'Neil against the ropes in a few occasions this seasons). She's opinionated and balanced and think the general presentation of the show is reasonably solid. Nige is Nige and think the panel is a decent enough mix. I mean, let's remember this is Radio Stoke covering Stoke, Port Vale and Crewe - Hardly the top job in the BBC. Clearly they are under pressure from the club to spout positive propaganda at every opportunity but I think all in all they do a fairly good job.

If your using a smart speaker, Alexa and the like you get it through BBC sounds which can't play commenrty live that's why you get the this program is unavailable DAB and FM usually have the games but BBC stoke use all 3 platforms for the 3 normal matchday games, one is usually FM one DAB and one on MW/free view. I listened to the game yesterday using Alexa. Started listening to P&G at 5pm but stopped because I went out not because it went off line. Can’t get Championship commentary on any platform probably because we’re out of area in Devon. Yes I have the same problem in London so I have to pay the stoke+ radio subscription and so get next to naff all from the licence fee.....

Nige is a legend but every legend has his day. Yes and you shouldn't have to tell a legend when to quit they should know when the time is right and act accordingly.

The difference between Lee Blakeman and Nige commentating is like chalk and cheese even though Nige is old enough to be his granddad. When Nige is commentating, he paints a picture of the game with his descriptive brilliance and you know exactly where the play is going on. Yes, he does make a few howlers but they're normally ones that make you chuckle rather than angry. After all, what would a Stoke game commentary be like without a few 'Nigeisms' thrown in. On the other hand (and I don't have a downer on Blakeman and I really enjoy his morning show three days a week), half the time he isn't commentating on the game. He's away with what's going on everywhere else other than the game. One moment we're attacking in the opposition final third and his next bit he tells us about the game is that we're defending a corner. So give me Nige any time despite his occasional bloopers. As for Ange, she doesn't feature too much so I don't understand why people have a downer on her. Her after-match interview with MON is always concise and knowledgeable and she's not afraid to ask difficult questions. She doesn't go over the top with her personal criticism and would be foolish to do so. MON might be a quiet bloke but he doesn't suffer fools gladly and I wouldn't like to be the one who says to him, "Those were terrible substitutions Michael."
We should all be grateful we don't have Graham McGarry doing our commentary. If that happened I'd never listen to a Stoke commentary again.
OS.

I’ve said this before, but Nigel Johnson is one of the only things from my childhood that remains.
Whenever I listen to him, it just takes me back to listening in my bedroom, 30 odd years ago as a small child.
They were magical times, and as with many of us on here, much has changed since then, and plenty for the worse.
The best thing about not going these days (I do have a season ticket btw) is getting to listen on radio stoke to NJ.

Nige's commentary around the sending off, penalty and outfield player going in goal was beyond embarrassing. He literally hadn't a clue what was happening. He was all over the shop. I didn't hear Nige's commentary as I was at the game but if he didn't know what was happening at that point, he had that in common with a very significant proportion of the Stoke fans, but presumably didn't have access, as the rest of us did, to dozens of people around us to consult.

I don't know if there is a commentary delay with regards to the pictures, or if the media suite at Forest is a bit behind the times and they don't have access to a screen, but Nige was repeatedly saying the sub goalkeeper was coming on as Worrall was visibly donning the jersey. Also, as an experienced commentator, surely he should have realised that Forest had made their subs by that point, and an outfield 'keeper' was really the only option to them?

My favourite bit was. "Who's gone in goal? He's wearing the Number 30." That made me laugh as I could see him scrambling through his team sheet for the name of the no. 30 then realising his mistake. I love the quirky commentary. Clearly more suited to radio than TV but definitely a personality rather than an automaton. Imagine not having his bumbling to laugh at. Try commentating yourself sometime, keeping up with play, getting names right and filling in the hiatus when nothing's happening. Sometimes he's quite poetic doing that.

I wholeheartedly agree with Old stokie for all his cock ups, Nige does paint a picture with words and at least you have an idea of what's going on. After the kick off today it must have been a full 2 minutes before Blakeman mentioned what was going on on the pitch.

Yes I have the same problem in London so I have to pay the stoke+ radio subscription and so get next to naff all from the licence fee..... Effectively we are having to pay twice for the same service FYD. BBC license fee covers TV, IPlayer and BBC National and Local Radio Stations. But BBC Radio Stoke have sold the Championship match day commentary broadcasting rights to Stoke+ who in turn charge a subscription to listen to something we’ve already paid for. This does not cover FA Cup so that’s why I could listen to the Wigan game. The 1st couple of seasons in the Championship I could listen to the commentary on DAB by just registering with Stoke+, but the club obviously spotted another moneyspinner and introduced subscription.

Nigel’s mistakes are all part of the charm and over the past five years have often been the most enjoyable part of the match day experience. . Because they don’t actually matter, and the club isn’t paying him £50k or £60k a week to make the same mistakes week in week out.
When he finally retires, he’ll probably be replaced by someone without the same appreciation for what the big moments mean to Stoke fans that Nigel has developed over decades, because that’s how local media generally operates in the modern day.

Yes its annoying paying twice on principle wouldn't be so bad but the commentary is often 60-90 seconds behind too so sky or betting apps have a goal showing before the live commentary. Its not standard a good few weeks back I was so bored I tried radio suffolk who were carrying live commentary of the ipswich game against crewe.

Yeah, I do love Nige and generally jump to his defence as much as anyone, but honestly.. surely it’s absolute basics to have a note of how many subs each team has made. And it’s not even as if he realised himself, Clive Clarke had to tell him. All this while the players were bloody exchanging shirts on the pitch. It still raises a fond smile more than anything but then I’m generally watching a stream. It must be a bit frustrating if you’re listening

A commentator from the old skool and the new breed are not a patch on the old guys pretty much across the board for me. However I think the sad day is becoming ever closer when the mic needs to be hung up.

I've sat in the home and away ends watching Stoke plenty and the bollocks I hear said at both suggests otherwise.

So.. When Stoke are at home I always have to change bands post match from DAB to FM until the Vale match has finished on DAB when they join up again. So have just presumed that If Stoke were at home then Vale would be on DAB and then Stoke would be when they're away from home. Couldn't go the game today so tuned in to listen and it appears our areas second club have the DAB monopoly as Stoke are tucked away on FM again! Know its nothing major in the grand scheme of things but still annoying none the less! DAB coverage is far superior to FM yet Stoke, the regions top club with double the support of Vale if not more get the second rate radio-waves!
