50 years ago today since we beat the shit 2-1 in a league cup replay. Epic. Late winner. Imagine the mental. Actually, imagining not required for some on here who were there.

Our League Cup run up to and including the final which included 3 ties with Man United and 4 with West Ham was watched by 469,956 or nearly half a million people.
Just think about that for a moment!

Yes, we were working in Hinkley and drove up to watch them. What struck me was how dull the floodlights seemed.

We seemed to be in loads of cup matches and I get them mixed up. Also drove up to Halifax for one. I think we knocked Utd out of both cups that season.

How many times did we go to Old Trafford?

If I remember correctly, we had to come from behind in the replay against United. If the away goal rule had applied at the time we would not have made it to the Final (West Ham 2 at the Vic)! The second replay in the semi at Old Trafford was one of the most exciting games I have seen as well as one of the coldest wet nights I can remember.

What an epic season that was. We played Man Utd 7 times over the season losing just once. Besides the 3 FA cup ties we played them twice in League Cup 4th round and twice in the league. The 7 games were watched by a total of over 300k fans. More staggering statistics…… we played a total of 71 competitive games because we also competed in the Anglo Italian and Texaco Cup completions. The season started 14th Aug 71 and finished with the FA Cup 3rd place play off vs Birmingham on 5th August 72, a week before 72-73 season kicked off. Also some individual player stats ….. 9 players played 50 games or more of which 4 played over 60 games. The highest number of appearances was Jackie Marsh who had 69 appearances. Apart from the Cup successes the games took its toll on league performances where we finished 17th on 35 points. But that doesn’t tell the full story because after a decent start winning 8 and drawing 3 of the first 16 games, our league form didn’t just fall away it plummeted and we only managed 2 wins in the remaining 26 league games. Had it not been for that reasonably good start and the poor form of Forest and Huddersfield we would certainly have been battling against relegation.

I was going to post that our back 4 of Marsh, Pejic, Smith and Bloor played at total of 238 games between them. Micky Bernard played 60 games that season as well, and John Ritchie We played 6 games in one 17 day period, 4 games in one week towards the end inc. 2 away games in London and one in Manchester! Amazing season really. apart from Greenhoff and Ritchie we did not have another recognised forward in the whole squad unless you count Terry Conroy who was more of a winger. Ritchie (60) and Greenhoff (59) played in virtually every game!!!

Its a good point but by 1971-72 Peter Dobing's days as a forward were well behind him from my memory. He's an example of a player who changed his game quite considerably over his career as he lost his pace. Wonderful footballer. Anyway, the fact is no-one did chip in, Ritchie and Greenhoff took on the role from start to finish.

Anyway, the fact is no-one did chip in, Ritchie and Greenhoff took on the role from start to finish. Your memory serves you well Spit. Looking at Dobing scoring stats he scored 20+ regularly in 5 seasons at Blackburn and was well into double figures for majority of seasons up to 68-69 when his scoring suddenly fell away to single figures. This probably coincided with the arrival of King Jimmy from Birmingham and a change of role for Dobing.

I remember being a little kid right at the front of the Stoke End during the semi final against West Ham..All the excitement before the game, going 1-0 up through Dobing, and then the total disappointment when Hurst and Clyde Best scored their goals. Seeing Hurst bury his penalty I didn't give our Gordon a cat in hell's chance of saving the one Hurst took at Upton Park in the second leg - but we all know what a fantastic save Gordon made that night ! The rest, as they say, is history !

Dad took me some of the others including the semi at Stoke and OT ..and at least one other , possibly two that I’m never entirely sure about .. but definitely not the final Not going the final , still had my coat on an hour before kickoff somehow naively thinking I’d be whisked away ( was always a stupid kid , not much better now 😀) probably one of ‘the’ defining moments in my supporting life ..it made up my mind that if I wanted to see Stoke regularly I’d have to do so on my own ..and games with my dad would be the icing and the cream on the cake ..so at 12 got saving & planning
