I don’t get the fuss.
To be a good ref you need to know the rules and keep up with play.
There’s nothing bar misconceptions that should stop it from happening more often.
And let’s be honest, they can’t be any worse than the blokes that currently do it.

The few female refs I’ve seen have all been pretty decent and they seem to get more respect from the players which can only be a good thing.

Has a woman reffed a Premier League game yet?

Give it a decade and it won't be worth mentioning, as it should be.
The little snowflakes who get upset by a woman doing a job will take every chance for a potshot but they'll move onto something else eventually.

If they have proved that they are good enough to officiate at international level then fine, but let’s be honest this is all about pc and promoting women in the game.

And what’s wrong with promoting that anyway? There’s absolutely no obstacle bar outdated attitudes for females officiating men’s football.

It’s one of those things where a lady should be able to do as well as a man and from what I’ve seen so far they’re probably an improvement. It’s when it comes to strength and pace where the ladies game falls behind a bit. That’s understandable. So in a nutshell it’ll never be as entertaining as watching a men’s game but good luck to em trying to find a niche in the market.

Oh I know I was just trying to explain the difference in my opinion. Basically, although refs run a lot and that the physicality is on a level where both sexes are equal. When it comes to actually playing the game is where the difference becomes more stark. Bit like tennis I guess, the ladies want equal pay and may have it, I’m not sure, but they ain’t playing 5 set matches so…..

I wouldn't feel comfortable singing "who's the bastard in the black" to a lady, or "the referee's a wanker" come to think of it either.

Let’s face it the best liner I’ve seen is Sian Massey. I don’t ever remember seeing her get a decision wrong.

Only a story because it’s a novelty. I don’t think anyone bats an eyelid at female linesmen (lines people? 😂) anymore, but when Massey first started officiating high profile games it was talked about. The same with female MOTD commentators. It’s just one of those things that very quickly becomes the new normal. That’s not to say that all modern things smoothly bridge that transition from novelty to normal (or even deserve to, thinking specifically about the most deviant and perverted aspects of modern politics) but refereeing is clearly something where the best people should be in the jobs regardless of gender.

To be fair men only play 5 set matches in 4 Grand Slams a year and in the Davis Cup. All the other tournaments on the tour they play 3 sets just like the women.

I still think Sian Massey is one of the best liners we had at Stoke in the Premier League. A bloke used to sit near me in block 23 and he spent most of the games she officiated in moaning about her inability to judge offsides or whose throw in it was. Everyone else thought she was mostly spot on. After we had watched her (usually excellent) performance on MOTD he used to get ribbed at the next home match but he was just as bad next time she ran the line. I think moaning about Sian Massey was one of his main hobbies!

Possibly the 5 set matches for men were promoted by the grand slam organisers to make them seem a bit more "special." I think a lot of a smaller tournaments would find it difficult to fit in 5 set matches especially if bad weather affected the tournaments. The grand slams have lights and some covered courts which enable a tournament to cope with bad weather better.

Just like no-one really bats an eyelid at female pundits, commentators and presenters anymore, apart from a few dinosaurs who'll die off soon enough.

Who cares what sex a ref is, or what gender identification they chose either for that matter, as long as the individual is of the necessary standard to do the job required of them?

Who cares what sex a ref is, Richard Keys That's going back a decade, I wonder if he still holds his small minded opinion now? For context the subtext of my post was that only a dinosaur would care.
